Hi BVB Fans,

I visited last week for the home match against Mainz. I come from Lancashire in England where we display our logo of the Lancashire red rose very proudly. I spotted this flag in the pre-match build up and I was wondering what the relevance to Dortmund is? It's identical to the Lancashire flag, especially with the yellow background.

Cheers!

  1. Look at the coat of arms of North Rhine-Westphalia. It features the Rhine, the Westphalian horse, and the Lippe rose.

The latter represents the state of Lippe.

  2. It’s the rose of Lippe the third region of the state of Northrhine-Westphalia, you can actually see it in the states heraldic showing the Rhine, the Saxon steed (symbol of Westphalia, you might recognize it from the coat of arms of Kent wich historically was a Saxon kingdom) and the Rose of Lippe. This flag belongs to a fan club from that specific area wich is why they reference it.

And the northrhine-westfalian coat of arms for reference

  3. As already mentioned, it is the Lippe rose. The coat of arms of the Lippe region. So significant that it is now even part of the coat of arms of North Rhine-Westphalia, the federal state where Dortmund is located.

The flag in the stadium belongs to a fan club. I myself am also in a fan club. We don’t have our own flag (yet), but we have also incorporated the Lippe rose into our logo.

We are called Borosen. The name of the fan club is a combination of Borussen, the name for BVB fans, and Rosenhöhe, the name of the school where the fan club was founded.
