Trippier was once again the toast of Tyneside, as his free-kick sealed a third Premier League win in a row, taking them four points clear of the relegation zone.
Wearing the captain’s armband, Trippier brilliantly fired home from the edge of the Leazes End box, referee Craig Pawson’s original penalty award for a foul on Joe Willock by Calum Chambers downgraded to a free kick by VAR official Paul Tierney, who spotted that the offence was marginally outside the penalty area.
Villa did appear to have equalised, until again, VAR overturned the decision due to an offside. Newcastle fought till the end and managed to hold on to another priceless three points.
The only blip in this win was the substitution of Trippier, for what looked like a bad foot injury…
