I don’t think there’s any question of them missing out on Champions League football. The teams below them are too inconsistent and Liverpool can still win games while playing badly.
The question should be how have Liverpool allowed themselves to end up in a situation like this, having spent such an astonishing amount of money in the summer?
I was genuinely shocked when I looked at their bench against City. There was absolutely nothing.
They made a £230M net spend in the summer. They shelled out £315M on three players and they’re playing a central midfielder at full back.
Their most important player will be 35 in a few months.
It is a complete failure of planning and transfer policy and they’ve squandered the chance to cement their position as the best team in England and instead have fallen, not only behind Arsenal and City, but also Villa.
