  1. So glad Willock got (sort of) an assist and Ramsey a goal later to make up for this. Both seem like players who needed the win.

  2. I think the game would be more attacking if there had to be clear daylight between the attacker and defender.

Calls like that are what make var frustrating. There should be a reasonable window of tolerance either way before they’re allowed to call the ref over for overrule. Ruins the game otherwise,  even for calls against us.

Fouls are a different scenario, but offside ought to have real world tolerances applied. Absolutely a no brainer.

CLEAR AND OBVIOUS. Not bees cock wanking hive orgies with tweezers against the screen replaying it 600 times to see a forehead pass an artificial line that has its own inherent inaccuracies

  4. Even more infuriating after how much work he still needed to do and such a lovely finish.

Offside was introduced to punish goal hangers, not determine if someone got a half inch head start. What genuine advantage does the attacker get at all in this situation?

Of course this is also after the league miraculously unearthed a ‘5cm margin of error’ rule for Liverpool earlier this season. A rule that won’t see the light of day again until those poor, hard done by sods next need it.

  5. Draw the line from the players’ feet. You DO NOT have an unfair advantage if your head or shoulder is past the defender’s foot. All this tells you is that the attacker is taller, or has a different running gait, or is naturally leaning forward in the direction they’re running because nobody runs like Shaggy being chased by a monster. If the defender reacts slowly – as in this case, as in the case of the Rat vs Joe Gomez at Anfield – they’re being gifted an advantage by facing the wrong direction. It’s stupid.

  6. I’ve made this point before, why are we relying on a CGI image?

If the VAR team drew stick figures on paper and then said “yeah, offside” we’ not trust it.

They are capable of using the actual match footage to get these super exact measurements, so why not show that?
Draw your lines on the video.

If this started happening for photo finishes in Horse racing, punters wouldn’t trust it.

  7. As a former ice hockey player, the whole thing seems ridiculous and football should have done it different 150 years ago with an offsides line instead of being level with defenders. As is, there is the determination of who is past who (except arms), and that is tied to when the ball is kicked in that direction. Both of those things can lead to on or off based on split seconds of when the line is drawn or ball kicked. Even hockey has some controversy having to look at whether a teammate crossed the blue line before the puck, but football has gotten ridiculous. Does anybody actually enjoy all this onside/offside controversy that happens so often? Same with penalty controversies. So many football matches have just a few scores, and half of them can be controversial offsides and/or penalties.
