Everton have crashed out of the cup this season for the second time. The league cup exit being due to a rotated squad losing to a struggling (and albeit slightly less rotated) Wolves side. And the FA cup exit being due to 9 first team players being unavailable and 2 poor penalties (Jimmy gets a pass for scoring the one to get us back in the game, plus it's extremely difficult to score two pens in one game).
Putting things in perspective our priorities over the last 3-4 campaigns have been survival rather than cup runs.
It would be nice to assume we shouldn't/won't be in a scrap again and we will build on our improved but thread bare squad. Is the the solution to our trophy drought to prioritise it over the league? Or is it more so luck of the drawer and performances/luck/refereeing competence on the night that's the issue?
Teams around us are getting better and it's safe to assume that winning these competitions is going to get more and more difficult each year as essentially any premier league team are contenders. Is it realistic that we will win a trophy in the next decade? And if so how do you think we can achieve it?

We’ve been in relegation battles for years. Most teams haven’t survived situations like that while remaining in the PL. I’ll take midtable and occasional disappointment for a couple years thanks. Yes we should be able to make a cup run but we really don’t have the depth for it. Let’s build a strong base, attract some quality players, build up young talent, then have a good go at it.
