Kimmich is best known as a defensive midfielder or right-back, but what really sets him apart is how complete his game is. He has excellent passing accuracy, strong tactical awareness, and a high work rate. He often controls the tempo of a match, helps in both defense and attack.

To be honest I see kimmich as a very good deep lying playmaker with box to box qualities. It would have been nice to have him freed of his defensive duties, so that he could roam as a midf playmaker like bruno fernandes for example.
The problem with kimmich is that he is unfortunately not very good defensively, he is okay, but nowhere near the likes of kante or declan rice who could cement a midfield by himself. His physical presence and weaker tackling make him a liability in midfield against technically strong and physical team. I think that is why he is often played as a right wingback.
