In fact, there is at least one incorrect statement here. However, all opinions are valid. Fernando Gomes didn't say he didn't talk to other coaches, he said he only formalized one proposal. And I must say that using the 3 central defenders can be very beneficial for Portugal, our full-backs, Cancelo, N.Mendes, Dalot, Guerreiro can be great assets in this tactical scheme… and we can play more flexibly in the attack with players like Leao, Felix, Jota,… , all players who like to walk around up front without having a fixed position. And with midfielders like Palhinha supporting the midfield and game thinkers like Bernardo Silva, B. Fernandes, Vitinha and ball carriers like Matheus and Renato, I think interesting things can be done in this system. But of course, only time will tell. Now we just have to wait and see.

I also believe he isn’t the right coach but i did some light research that conforted me a little bit. You see, Martinez actual prefered system is the 4-2-3-1. It was the formation he used while coaching Everton, also when they finished 5th in the premier. He would sometimes switch to a 4-3-3 or a 4-1-4-1 but only very rarely would he use a 3 center back formation, playing a 3-4-3 like 1 time per season. When he moved to Belgium he also started by using the 4-2-3-1 formation which he changed to a 3-4-3 later due to the lack of full backs in belgium squad. Like I said, I dont like the decision of not having a portuguese coach, but i at least hope we see the old 4-2-3-1 from Martinez

Mou is the best option for this current crop of Portuguese starts – Martinez has done absolutely nothing to deserve this job. He's got a great Agent that is for sure

I was confused by Roberto's appointment too but one thing I noticed in his press conference was he said he wanted an assistant coach who was a former national team player who "understands Portuguese football".

Hopefully we get to see a Figo or Deco or any other leader from our 2006 team because I think they would fit perfectly for an assistant coach

Actually excited to see what Roberto can do with Portugal. He finished his tenure with Belgium 80 games, 56 wins, 13 draws and 11 losses. 210 goals scored and 70 conceded. 3rd place finish in 2018 wc and lost to eventual winners France. 2020 euros lost in quarters to eventual winners Italia. Only this past tourney was a bad one in which all Belgium players that he had success with got much older. Also got Belgium ranked #1 in world in fifa rankings for long period of time. Pretty impressive stuff with Belgium and that was most likely Belgium most successful time in international footy under Roberto. Forca Portugal

Martinez only played 3 CBs at Belgium because they had literally no good full backs and lots of good CBs
