Although the Latvian 2nd division isn’t very competitive, the development teams from the 1st league are producing interesting results, such as Riga-2, the development team of Riga FC and current 2nd place with a goal differential of 60, the highest in the league, the main contributor? Glebs Patika, a 17 y/o striker, international for Latvia u19 who joined the club back in 2021 from Skonto Academy, the current league top goalscorer with 19 goals!
Haaland-esque season, physical attributes and playstyle, despite his young age, has an impressive physique, with good height and strength as well as top speed mainly due to his long stride, hasn’t found anyone able to stop him yet. Patika leverages his physicality into scoring goals really well, having a more poacher oriented playstyle, he will focus on sitting on the shoulder of the CB’s and look to run onto through balls from the midfield, aggressive on the offensive runs, gets himself into a lot of 1v1’s with the GK usually by performing blindsided and diagonal runs or exploiting the space between CBs, it seems playing a high defensive line, even medium, against him backfires almost every time. He’s very active off the ball, not only by being an offensive threat but also running at displaced balls and getting into physical duels to get the ball back with good work rate on the press. On the ball he’s more on the clumsy side, likes to use his robust build to protect the ball and rotate on defenders, has a more shoot on sight approach but puts a lot of power on his shoots, could use some accuracy to be even more dangerous, however technique is not his strong suit, improving it would most definitly exponentially benefit his playstyle.
In contrast with his off the ball, he likes to take his time with the ball, sometimes a bit too calm, losing the timing to pass or shot and simply losing possession, clearly in need of a more challenging league to stimulate his sense of urgency. Hopefully will be integrated with the main team soon, his stats speak for themselves, a loan to a topflight for next season is bare minimum, his chances of reaching higher grounds at the moment look really good.
