We picked up our second win in as many Premier League 2 matches on Friday night, beating West Ham 3-2 at Rush Green.

Marquinhos made his second start for Mehmet Ali’s side after impressing against Manchester United and it was the Brazilian who would prove to be the matchwinner once more.

We didn’t have things all our own way in the opening exchanges and the hosts took an early lead through Kamarai Swyer, the Hammers midfielder capitalising of a Zach Awe error to snatch the ball and finish beyond Tom Smith.

We found ourselves level almost instantly from the restart, Marquinhos finding space at the back post to head home after James Olayinka’s chipped cross at the end of a marauding run.

Khayon Edwards almost put us ahead midway through the half, exchanging passes well with Miguel Azeez in midfield, before seeing his instinctive effort cleared off the line in miraculous fashion.

Marquinhos scored our second moments before the break, rising well in a crowded penalty area to find the top corner with a glancing header from Charles Sagoe Jr’s lofted ball.

Ali’s men didn’t have to wait too long for another after the interval, Olayinka turning provider to finish with aplomb past after a defence-splitting pass from Matt Smith found the midfielder in space in the penalty area.

Mipo Odubeko’s reduced the deficit against the run of play midway through the second half, racing through one-on-one and firing low beyond Smith.

Edwards then came agonisingly close to scoring once more, his goal-bound strike heroically blocked by the Hammers backline after yet more good play from Olayinka to find our striker.

Smith was forced into action in the closing stages to deny Swyer with a reflex save to tip the midfielder’s effort over the bar.

We withstood West Ham’s late pressure to claim successive wins in our opening two matches of the Premier League 2 season.

  1. I don't know why we are trying to buy a winger when we have the likes of Saka, Marquinhos, Martinelli, Viera, Emile Smith-Rowe, Pepe, Reiss Nelson, who can play on the flanks. We just need a midfielder who is a bit more defensive minded like Youri Tielemans and we are good to go.

  2. Going back to the late 60s, before the 1971 double, Arsenal had a young right-winger, who used come in from the right wing to meet crosses from the left, and scored a few headers like that. By the time 1971 came round he had been switched to centre-forward and had a huge role in the double. His name? John Radford. Over the two brief videos of the U21s, Marquinhos reminds me of Radford.

  3. How many fans was Marquinhos playing in front of in Brazil each week? Now he's got a man and a dog! Get him up to the first team soon!

  4. Whole squad looks pretty good, certainly a few stand out stars possibly in the making. I’ll say Smith definitely deserves a shout with some fluid dribbling and the assist, good stuff from the young Gunners!

  5. I think marquinhos should be added to the first team forthwith…. It's clear to see that his standards are beyond u23's… What happens in football alot is that when you don't make that transition to level up after noticing ur in the wrong league, you start becoming mediocre

  6. Marquinhos should be given an opportunity in the FA Cup, League Cup, and Europa League. It seems like he can be next Martinelli. It was worth snatching him from Wolverhampton.

  7. What is Marquinhos doing in U21? He either be playing with the senior squad or loan him out. Or is Arteta keeping him to replace Pepe should he leave in this window?

  8. All Arsenal players, when you're playing in matches please remember it and repeat it in your mind "I'm stronger, I'm stronger I'm stronger, I'm stronger I'm stronger, I'm stronger I'm stronger, I'm stronger I'm stronger, I'm stronger I'm stronger, I'm stronger I'm stronger, I'm stronger I'm stronger, I'm stronger, I'm stronger, I'm stronger I'm stronger, I'm stronger I'm stronger, I'm stronger I'm stronger, I'm stronger"

  9. Mistakes were made, but Awe gave up too early for the first goal, even if he could not recover or block the ball now. The keeper could save and deflect it, he should have taken that into consideration

  10. Why doesnt English football let the avademy teams start from the national league and let them come up to have some competition.

Look at Spain, The netherlands etc. Villareal B and Ajax 2 play in the 2nd division. Much better and competitive and allows ppayers to develop even further
