That dude was overrated af for stat padding against rio ave. He was always going to be fools gold. His first touch isnt good, his runs arent good and honestly his finishing isnt either. Its not that shocking hes struggling, he was simply being overhyped

  2. Mother_Kale_417 on

Can’t blame him. Even Isak was having problems adapting to the PL after having played in the PL

Totally nothing to do with his new team

  3. what does success look like? Does he have to score twenty billion goals or isn’t simply being the first choice for the team at the top of the table a better measure?
That’s the numbers, I assume we’re talking about the eye test and the # of goals?

  4. Struggling to adapt. There is many flaws with his game – takes the ball square on, weak in the duals, picks the wrong run. I think there is definitely a confidence issue, but Arsenal cannot be “developing” a 27 year old striker. Since Jesus returned, he’s looked 10x the player on Gyokeres

  5. keysersoze-72 on

Adaption wouldn’t be an issue if it was just a matter of style.

He just looks outclassed in the PL…

  6. whoppermaltmilkballs on

I hope he goes to a more suitable team next season. I don’t think he is a good fit for Arteta’s Arsenal. I actually think he’d be a solid replacement for Watkins at Villa if Emery stays

  7. Just-hereforthetips on

    He’s so over analysed.

based on the striker market, it was either him or Sesko for Arsenal, neither the complete answer.

  8. Resident_Fail6825 on

I think he’s been hyped beyond the level of his abilities. His finishing, hold-up and link play, running off the ball and positional sense are not good enough. Armando Broja – who many might consider a journeyman and plays for Burnley – doesn’t score many but does the other three components on that list exceptionally well. Gyo would do well to study videos of Broja in action. As it is, he is only effective running after long balls played down either wing but that is not Arsenal’s usual style of play.

Arsenal fell into the same trap Tuchel/Chelsea did of thinking adding a scorer/pocher to a team that creates a lot of chances means 2 + 2 = 4 when in reality you lose a shit load of fluidity and general play.

Apart from Haaland, that type of deal with the devil has never really worked.

  10. Fidel___Castro on

he’s doing fine for what was paid, Arsenal knew they weren’t signing a Haaland. Gyok is a striker that makes runs and tries to muscle people, which is what they needed.

He’s not best at the world at it, but he’s better than anyone else in the team. When Arsenal need a false nine, they have options. When they need someone to make runs to force a backline to try and offside trap, they now have that too. It’s working for the team, but the numbers don’t reflect that contribution

  11. InternationalUse2355 on

There isn’t a single thing he’s good at apart from penalties. I’m pretty sure he’ll be warming the bench if havertz and jesus stay fit.

  12. He wasn’t bad against Villa, plus the fact that Jesus and Havertz are also back means we have options and can change things up. No need to go overboard on the analysis.

  13. Arsenal don’t set up to play with a striker so they don’t need one. I’m sure Gyokeres would crush it at Brentford, Leeds, Fulham or such sides but other than City nobody plays that way and even they only do to some extent which suits Haaland’s ways

  14. Misused for sure. Not enough service from the middle. WTF happened to zubi dropping picture perfect bombs into box? Merino put in perfect passes to eze during nld, why dont they do it for Vic? Pisses me off.

  15. Isfeidirlinn90 on

There’s a number of factors going on.

I don’t think any sensible fan felt he’d be putting up the same numbers he was at Sporting given the strength of the PL in comparison but over time there’s a few traits that have become a worry. It’s been mentioned by fans already but his movement in and around the area hasn’t been very good. My thoughts before getting him was that if Merino could score goals in this Arsenal team then Gyokeres should too. Hasn’t panned out like that and I feel his movement is an issue. He seems to react instead of anticipate. It’s actually one of the most surprising things about his time at Arsenal so far.

He’s not the strongest technically either but I don’t think many suspected he would be.

The style of play doesn’t really suit him and at the same time he isn’t missing sitter after sitter either. I criticised his movement but at the same time he’s opening up space for others in games. He has shown to be a bit of late bloomer in his career so we’ll see what happens.

It would have been interesting to see how he would have been if Havertz didn’t get injured too.

  16. -MadeAmazing- on

Misused. Every striker has struggled under Arteta. Gyokeres definitely needs to improve, but the team very much so need to adapt.

There’s a lot I have liked about Gyokeres so far, and we seem to keep winning when he’s there.

  17. Darthkhydaeus on

Arsenal arr not playing like they have a striker. Rarely do they try to find him early or drive ro the line to cut back. Of you watch City play, their first thought it get Haaland open and we score. Arsenal are too intricate for their own good.

  18. I think we would all agree that given the number of starts all of us expected more out put from him. At the same time I think a lot of the criticism is a bit dramatic, with some fans and rivals labeling him a bust. So I want to make a couple of points.

    1. Kai Havertz shows it’s not over. In Kai’s first 22 games he had 4 goals including 1pk. VG has had 7 goals with two pks. I get that they were a little different positionally but people were writing Kia off as well, and he had already spent several years in the EPL.

    2. I think VGs presence is helping others get opportunities. I saw this several times in the AV game. The most obvious was when Hincapie fell, but in the run up you can clearly see both defenders going to VG. Hincapie would not have had that space without VG. Another example is the Zubi goal. The space for Zubi to run into was created by the second defender moving to VG.

As I said I think we all want and expect more, but I also think the jury is still out. A lot of people here are criticizing his movement and anticipation. That can be learned. So yes, both he and the team have to adapt.

  19. ApricotCharacter1971 on

If you compare to haaland then yes if you compare to a normal premier league striker then no

  20. Bit of both really, I don’t think they are playing to his strengths but at the same time I think he needs to adapt better.

Seen a few games this season where he’s been isolated and they’ve struggled to get him in the game, then I’ve seen a few games where he actually comes deep and gets involved and he’s looked way better.

Think he’ll come good at some point but I don’t think he’s the deadly striker many people thought they were signing. I can’t ever see him being a 20 goal a season player tbh.

  21. He was looking so much better before his injury and I think he had a good game against Villa, so hopefully the more he plays, the better he looks, just like pre injury

I think he needs time for him and his teammates to develop an understanding

When the team does play to his strengths (for instance the ball from calafiori out wide) and he created a goal all by himself with a good finish. Shoulder to shoulder he’s elite, an absolute beast. But back to goal he’s poor, but serviceable.

  22. itstheboombox on

Just give it time, the team is not used to having someone of his profile, plus us ensuring all 11 players defend means our forward dont get insane attacking numbers

  23. For me, he shares a flaw with Hojlund at United, he’s one level down compared to the league when it comes to swiftness. Sesko shows that too.

When you need 1-2 more touches to bring the ball and your body where you need to, that is more than enough for experienced PL defenders to take you out of your comfort zone even more.

  24. Sufficient_Bass2600 on

He is simply not good enough.

    **Technically and Physically**
He does not seem to understand how to protect the ball. EPL defenders are more aggressive and the English referees more lenient than in the Portuguese league. So he has less time and physically he can’t dominate as he could in the league.

    **Tactically**
As TH14 explained in a video he does not anticipate moves. He runs toward where the ball is rather than where it would or could be.
As demonstrated in Portugal, He would perfect in a team which has been coached to play in very specific pattern.

In a team without attacking pattern that relies on set pieces and individual brilliance and off the cuff movements like Arsenal he lacks the natural instinct to make it work.

  25. Not good enough for the PL. It’s not being picked up on since the team are overall doing well and top.

  26. itsheadfelloff on

Misused mainly. Arsenal just aren’t direct enough in open play, it’s always a lot of passing to pull the opposition out of formation which slows the game down. Having said that I was expecting him to be more of a bully, he’s getting pancaked by defender’s all the time.

  27. thatbwoyChaka on

I think given time he’ll adapt; he’s not going to become a legend or even a ‘Cult Hero’ but he’ll do well

Having said that; I do think Arsenal need to tell him to move to where the other players usually deliver the ball and not to try and shitping it into the net every time

He would be better off playing in a similar style to Eidur Gudjohnsen

  28. Just a mismatch all around. Gyokeres needs set patterns of play as he’s a reactive striker (as in he reacts to what’s happening around him) rather than proactive (e.g. Ronaldo or Haaland). Arsenal rely more on individual brilliance to score goals, so it’s hard for a striker without good technical ability to do well.

But ultimately, Gyokeres isn’t good enough for Arsenal to change their style of play, so imo it’ll never really work out for all parties

  29. UnknownParasites on

For me, it just comes down to his touch and technical ability not being good enough for the PL. It’s just that simple.

  30. Realistic-Tiger-2842 on

He simply doesn’t look up to this level at all. His touch is absolutely horrendous, he gets bullied by every defender and doesn’t make good runs at all.

Literally the third best striker at the club and that’s pretty crazy.

  31. buenavictoria on

I don’t think he’s very good, but there’s not a ton of strikers outside of Haaland lighting the world on fire. The league is cagier than it has been in a long time. None of them have space or time to operate.

  32. Electronic_Laugh_760 on

Utd needed Gyokeres and Arsenal needed Sesko.

Both would have done better at opposite clubs.

  33. Apart_Bat6217 on

    Isak was what they needed.

Being the forward for Arsenal isn’t easy. You need to be fairly clinical, and you may need to find the game depending on the day.

Isak can play as a regular nine and sit in the box. He can also run in behind. He’s also very happy to peel wide and take on his opponent.

He’s probably a bit prone to missing easier chances but he makes up for it with his play elsewhere.

People smarter than me have explained why Gyokeres has struggled, but Isak was the answer.
