  1. ***The Telegraph reports:*** Billy Bonds, [who has died aged 79](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2025/11/30/billy-bonds-west-ham-record-appearance-manager-dies-79/), was an English footballer and manager who served West Ham United for 27 years, making a club-record 799 first-team appearances, twice lifting the FA Cup and becoming their oldest ever player, before graduating to the coaching staff and later managing the team.

    Bonds, who allied aggressive ball-winning and passing prowess to aerial strength and inspirational leadership, succeeded Bobby Moore as West Ham captain. He was widely regarded as one of the best players never to represent England, although he was twice selected for the squad.

    He had broken into the game as a right-back with Charlton Athletic. After being switched to midfield by West Ham – where his long hair, beard and combativeness conjured a piratical image – he was operating as a central defender when called up by England in 1977 and 1981.

    On the first occasion, a World Cup qualifier against Italy, he remained an unused substitute. Before the second, against Brazil, he collided with West Ham goalkeeper Phil Parkes and sustained two broken ribs.
