Hello

A few months back I posted here about how watching matches alone kind of sucked. Shouting at the TV, reacting out loud, while juggling texts with friends. That post got way more responses than I expected and a lot of people said they felt the same. So I kept working on the idea.

Four months later that idea is now an app. I am so sorry in advance.
It is called MatchSquad. It is probably a bit rough around the edges, but it went live this week and I would really appreciate if people tried it out.
iOS: https://apps.apple.com/in/app/matchsquad-live/id6754936468

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.matchsquad.www

What the app is for

Do you have a group of friends you talk football with. Then you might like this. The idea is to bring that same group into a closed squad on MatchSquad and let that be your small space for all football talk. Pre match hype, midweek banter, meltdown therapy, anything.

Try it with a sample squad

If you want to explore without committing, I made a small Borussia Dortmund squad you can join and look around. The code is 1GZ6VG. Capacity is ten for now and I can make another one if needed. Ideally though, you create your own squad and add your own group of friends.

Live match experience

The app is meant to come alive during live games. You can keep it open on the side and whenever something happens or you want to vent you send a quick reaction. Your friends hear it instantly with autoplay. If someone is on a delayed stream, spoiler free mode makes sure the reaction reaches them only when their stream catches up. Everything shows up on a simple timeline that you can revisit later like a little matchday memory lane.

Outside matchdays

Even when the match is not live, you can still share your excitement leading up to the game or complain after full time like you already do. It is just your own small corner for your football group.

How is this different from WhatsApp

A lot of people will ask this and honestly I asked myself the same thing while building. The way I watch matches is that I send a quick voice or text and then go back to watching. I am not having proper conversations during the ninety unless something major happens. MatchSquad is built exactly for that style. With autoplay and spoiler free mode you do not have to tap or play anything manually. You just hear your squad’s reactions naturally as moments happen. It feels closer to watching together even if everyone is at home.

Maybe this will resonate and maybe it will not. But I figured it is worth putting out there and seeing what people think.

If you do give it a go I would love any feedback. Good bad ugly weird anything.

Cheers.

  1. For anyone interested to get started, I’ve created a Borussia Dortmund specific squad that you can join and look around (current max capacity 10, and can create another one).

Use squad code – 1GZ6VG to join.

  2. I already joined! As someone in Spain and being a BVB fan, it’s quite hard to find even someone to chat with about the matches… I find the idea really cool, thank you for this. 🙂
