A major summer swap deal is officially confirmed between Juventus and FC Porto.

Alberto Costa, the promising 21-year-old right-back, leaves Juventus to join FC Porto in a permanent deal worth €16 million (€15M fixed fee plus €1M in add-ons). In return, Juventus will receive experienced Portuguese defender João Mário, along with an additional €3 million in cash.

What this deal means:
• For Porto:
They secure one of Portugal’s brightest young defensive prospects in Costa, who adds long-term value and dynamism to their backline.
• For Juventus:
João Mário brings versatility, leadership, and familiarity with top-flight football, offering a solid option to strengthen their right side.

  1. This is probably a pacage deal considering the extremely convenient Conceicao deal. I think in the years juve fell off because they couldn't keep up with time, signing the best players you can get is not enough nowdays, our recruitment in the last years was horrible,we just signed great players withouth thinking about theyr purpose on the pitch and it became a mess. Recruitment should be done based on the system that the manager plays. I'm tired of us splashing cash on promising players and praying it works,we need to build a good team that makes sense. I would have liked to keep costa as a backup, but the signing of Joao Mario is amazing for our current system (tudor will never change his tactics,he never did it before and I don't think he will start doing it now.),but if we can close that Molina deal I think we look great on the right and we were clearly lacking winbacks after it was declared that weah will be sold. I don't agree with the wingback comment you made,it's easily the most tiring positions in all of football, you need players that are good all around to play it and Injuries frequently occur in this position so you need a minimum of 2 different players for side or it will get messy during the season if injuries occur(they are pretty frequent at juve,we still couldn't get a good fitness coach even tough we changed it 2 times in 2 years)

  2. the thing is each player fits the other team better, Joao Mario aint no star but hes good offensively with good dribling, good linkup play and decent end product, his problem is defensive wise where hes meh with a low defensive iq

  3. JOÃO MÁRIO is a Portugal international…incredible going forward and very fragile defensively. I think it's a fair swap. Might work for both teams

  4. I could be wrong but I thought Costa is a full back and Mario is a wingback.
If Port now plays 4 man backline, then no place for Mario.
And Juve play 3 man backline, no place for Costa (naturally). In the CWC, Costa played the RWB in 3421.

So, on paper, this deal makes sense for both parties, regardless of comparative qualities. Tudor doesn't seem to be looking for a defensive player in this swap. Unless he plays 4 in the back, then we're doomed.

  5. I always said that Juventus management are poor in terms of managing the team transfer targets. They have no vision!!! Costa, weah like those dude are strong and attacking bro!!!!

I know what this Juve management are thinking 🤔

  6. Joao Mario is not that bad, he's that kind of player that can easily get through 2/3 players but then miss a 2m pass, he's really good with both feet, good dribbling, strong on the 1vs1, decent crossing, pretty decent shotting, the link up with Chico as seen in Porto could be interesting, if he improves his decision making and his defense you will have a pretty decent player, similar to Cuadrado imo, but that's a big if because he's 25 and hasnt been able to do that so far.

  7. Porto fan here, Joao Mario is not a bad player, he's great at atacking, but his defensive game isn't great… Since he's a right back, that is a problem 😅 I think this transfer was great for Porto and for both players. Joao Mario needs a change to progress in his career, and Alberto Costa will have the game time needed at Porto (wich he didnt have at Juve) to grow as player.

  8. Joao Mario is way better than Alberto Costa, especially at making plays,by a technical standpoint, making assists, crossing, offensively, putting through balls etc etc…
Alberto Costa is going to need a miracle to get better technically and by a speed/pace standpoint.

  9. Alberto costa was good when playing as part of the three at the back, and with some more game time there he would have been great because he knew when to do the runs forward similar to what Bastoni does at Inter. As a rwb i never rated him, not great on the ball, cant dribble in small spaces and decision making going forward was not good enough. I know he is young. I think given that Juventus kept Gatti and have kalulu they are sorted on the right centre back position and as such wanted a player who can attack more comfortably to dominate the teams especially those who defend low.

  10. Hey guys, Porto fan here. João Mario is not a bad asset. He has been playing as a starter for 3/4 years, with european competion every season and winning trophies. He has been rotating a bit due to Porto way of playing, where we play with very atacking wing-backs, even with 4 at the back and it is very physically demanding. It was only in the last half of the season where we played 3 at the back and actualy two winger backs, apart from that, it was always normal RB.

It is true that he was a RW and then was adapted to RB, five years ago, and that is why its attacking side is way better then his defensive one. I think Porto won the trade only because Alberto is younger and has more potential now. But João is very quick, is experienced, has a very good crossing and width dribling. His lowest points are physicality, which then affects his defending, and his weak foot, he looks like he only plays with his right foot.

To sum up, Juventus was not completely robbed with this trade as you mention. For a fair trade, I would say it should have been 8M diffrence minimmum. João Mario is ready to take to strating spot i think. He was now in a low performance period but he needed some new fresh air and I think you would like him as a Ok player. He won't be your star for sure.

If you have any other doubts about him let me now and I will happly help you with them! Best of luck for this new season!

  11. João Mário is a pretty good player, he was a Porto player since he was 8. You got somethings right, he's not a full-back, he is a right winger, he can't defend, he has tremendous pace and stamina, but has zero physicality, honestly I think he would benefit from putting on some muscle.

  12. even porto fans did not believe when the first rumors for the transfer were coming out, both business side and mid term desportive side it's not beneficial to juve….but we are grateful to Juve's generosity for saving us from 2 dead weights (mario and francisco)

  13. Porto made a good move, in the past 2 years Joao Mario has not been playing much due to being injured for the majority of the season. I wish him luck

  14. Oh.. its gets worse than that…. most of JM youth experience was as left winger. Once he got promoted to the senior squad he played a little few minutes on his natural postition. He got adapted as a right back, because there was a lack of right backs at the club. In all these years at the senior squad he never learned how to properly press, mark or to leg position. He had one above average season. All the luck to him, he played 15 years with our jersey.
