Saudi Arabia were intent on showing the world that they hadn’t come to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar just to make up the numbers. They came good on their promise by beating Lionel Messi’s Argentina in their opening group game, before succumbing to defeat to Robert Lewandowski’s Poland, and an inspired Mexico side.

In this video, we’ll be retracing how Herve Renard has transformed the fortunes of the Saudi Arabian national side.

  1. He is a great coach – what he did with Zambia and Ivory Coast was exceptional. I remember Morocco in 2018 with him as a coach at the World Cup – they played fantastic just were unlucky not to get more points. Saudi Arabia played very well in this tournament, deserved to get something from Poland for sure.

  2. If Saudi Arabia lost to Argentina, weaker teams like Morocco won't perform better like now. Because Saudi Arabia's ultradefensive and counterattack tactics further influenced other teams like Japan, South Korea, Australia, Cameroon, Tunisia, and Morocco to defeat bigger teams. Morocco is even better because their tactics allowed them to progress further to the semifinals with the likes of Yassine Bounou, Hakim Ziyech, Youssef En-Nesyri, and, of course, Achraf Hakimi.
