Gareth Southgate has revealed a conversation with England team-mate Stuart Pearce was “invaluable” in helping him deal with his Euro 96 penalty miss.

Southgate, now the England manager, has spoken about how he felt responsible for ending the feelgood factor sweeping the nation as hopes grew that the Three Lions would secure a first major title in 30 years.

And he says talking about the miss with Pearce, who endured his own shoot-out agony at the 1990 World Cup, helped him immensely.

  1. Get rid of Southgate, he’s a nice guy but too much of a lefty liberal, the last three penalty takes he chose was totally wrong, should have been sterling, grealish and Pickford

  2. I am sorry you missed your penalty Gareth, as did England players against Italy in the final of Euro 2020, as its a game of
nervous and I do not put anyone down who miss penalties from any country, as I say this as an Italy fan and we have missed
penalties in both in World Cups and European Championships. This is football and there has to be a winner and a loser and I am afraid penalties are the only way to settle a drawn game. It takes bottle to come up and take a penalty and you hope it
goes in for you, as I have played football and scored and missed penalties in my day.

  4. Paul Ince should be more haunted by the thing than you, senior player with plenty of medals yet couldn't even watch. It was only the media who called him the guvnor and even they stopped after that.

  5. Imagine the feeling of disappointing a whole nation, I really hope he can get his redemption, I think we have all been fine with his miss, but it’s not easy to just accept that.

  6. Man, I remember watching Southgate’s penalty miss. All those years ago and it’s still one of those big football memories. He’s a nice guy and penalty shootouts are brutal
