Head coach Graham Arnold insisted that: “nobody in Australia gave us a chance,” after the ‘Socceroos’ sealed their place at the World Cup in Qatar by beating Peru on penalties in the AFC-CONMEBOL play-off on Monday.
The game in Al Rayyan, Qatar finished scoreless after 90 minutes and extra-time, and Australia made a bad start to the ensuing shoot-out when Martin Boyle failed to convert the opening spot kick.
But substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne, who replaced starter Mathew Ryan in the 120th minute, did enough to put off Peruvian penalty-takers Luis Advincula and Alex Valera, and the ‘Socceroos’ won the shoot-out 5-4 to reach a fifth consecutive World Cup finals.
