Hans-Joachim Watzke is facing a smear campaign in the power struggle for the presidency of Borussia Dortmund.
“For a few weeks now, people have been trying to make a caricature of me. That hasn’t been the case for 20 years,” said the CEO on Friday at his 21st and final annual press conference. If the election committee does not select him as the candidate, but the incumbent Reinhold Lunow, he will withdraw his candidacy.
Support from managing director Cramer
Watzke sees himself discredited in advance, and he has Carsten Cramer at his side. It is “bitter and unbearable” how Watzke’s integrity has recently been called into question, said the managing director. There had been compliance proceedings against Watzke – with the result that there was no truth to an anonymous accusation that he had incorrectly billed flights. This and leaks to the press, said Cramer, “we have never experienced this before”. He feared that the situation was damaging the club.
On a personal level, Watzke looked back without any great melancholy. He feels “no pain of parting, but a sense of gratitude to be sitting here. We could always rely on each other. There is also a feeling of relief that I no longer have to make a decision.” Watzke is stepping down as Chairman of the Management Board of the KGaA.

Its Not a smear campaign, we just have been easy with you the last years because we expected you to quit.

Can’t say that I’m looking forward to his election campaign for the next three months.

Uneducated take: I’m so tired of these internals. I feel like we completely lost the focus of football (at times)….

He’s slowly turning into an authoritarian dictator and it’s scary for our club.

Brother, just do your candidacy and shut up (and hopefully take the L at the end of the day).
He’s making a caricature out of himself for years.

He’s on his way to bringing Hoeness levels of chaos to the club. Good that his buddy Sammer already got muzzled. Also Watzke was way too focused on building his career at DFB, DFL and UEFA recently, all while the club management is infighting. It would be the best to cut ties completely.
