Australia defender Harry Souttar said on Friday that he and his team-mates will “respect” Argentina’s star forward Lionel Messi, but emphasised the power of the “collective” in attempting to stop the 35-year-old.
Australia take on Messi’s Argentina in their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar on Saturday.
Australia have already exceeded expectations after they progressed from Group D, which featured defending world champions France and European Championship semi-finalists Denmark – the latter of which Graham Arnold’s side defeated 1-0 on Wednesday to book their place in the last 16.
Argentina, as one of the pre-tournament favourites, recovered from a shock 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia in their Group C opener to beat Mexico and Poland by 2-0 scorelines to advance.
