The Europa League this season has been poor and United and Tottenham got extremely lucky. Pretty much all the teams other than them who were serious contenders were either facing issues with form (Sociedad and Lazio), giving up on their season (Frankfurt selling Marmoush) or just straight up going bankrupt (Lyon). Roma were unlucky in that they got knocked out of the cup even after winning the first leg against Atheltic Bilbao cause Hummels got an early red that even he apologized for later and admitted was a stupid mistake.
That only leaves Athletic Club as the other serious contender for the cup, which doesn't bode well given the sheer quality that was present the last time in the Europa League.
There's also the fact that the new league format on these European tournaments mean strong Champion's League teams will no longer drop down to the Europa League to compete.
