The Portuguese fullback has had an outstanding season so far for Man City, playing a key role in a so far successful season for the blues. So what’s an inverted wing back? Let’s take a look at the way Guardiola has deployed Cancelo.

First taking a look at the defensive aspect of the inverted wing back. The inverted wing back functions much like a standard full back or wing back would by dropping into their backline. However, whilst a traditional full back or wing back will offer width to an attack, usually through overlapping runs, the Inverted Wing Back will look to drift inside and create space for players around them.

At Bayern Munich we saw the first iteration of Guardiola’s Free eights with inverted full backs. Guardiola joined the European Champions who won the treble playing a 4-2-3-1 with traditional, overlapping full backs playing behind inverted wingers but Pep looked to evolve the side. His use of Philipp Lahm and David Alaba as inverted full backs saw a fundamental change to the way Bayern operated.

The 2020/21 season has seen Guardiola move towards an in-possession shape of a 3-4-3 diamond.
This shape is created from a 4-3-3 base and Cancelo operates as an inverted wing back from both the left back slot, where he’s on the opposite side to his stronger foot, as well as the right back slot. Regardless of his position, City create this attacking shape by using their wingers to hold the width, one midfielder moves to number 10 to support the striker whilst the other remains in a number eight position as Cancelo makes up the fourth midfielder.

  1. Cancelo have been excellent at Right Inverted Fullback.
Now City has been rumored to sign in Gosens from Atlanta, Imagine both of them playing just made me crazy, lol.

  2. great one Dave, love me some Cancelo, also I think it really proves pep and city's quality and audacity to be one of the first teams to execute the 3-4-3 diamond so beautifully.

  3. Everyone amazed with Pep and his ideas he’s using 343 with a tight diamond in midfield with one wide midfielder dropping in to create a 433 in their build up play Cruyff was doing the same thing with Barca when Pep was playing

  4. When Pep came to England he was often asked how/whether he adapted his style to the league. And while I'm sure he did that to some extend – had other things to worry about than in other leagues – he said and has always said: "I adapt to the qualities of my players." And it shows particularly this season where he has adapted the team to the qualities of Cancelo and also Rodri – who wasn't a like for like replacement for Fernandinho, as everyone could see last season, making people wonder if Rodri was the right fit. At the same time we've seen how the offensive approach has slightly changed over the past season or two due to the loss of Sané and his directness

  5. Interestingly in recent games we've seen Aaron Wan Bissaka play a bit more inverted, especially with Dan James in front of him. The reason is likely because in the past, James and Wan Bissaka has occupied the same space a lot of the time effectively crowding each other.

  6. Cancelo may be the best fullback in the world
But Dani ALVES is the best fullback in the history of football 🤘❤️❤️💪💪

  7. 5:35 I'd be really curious to know if someone has been able to recreate that shape (classic 4-3-3 without the ball, that evolves into a 3-4-3 diamond with the ball) in Football Manager…

  8. I love baller wingbacks, and I really love this trend. Started seeing Trent drifting more to the middle and utilize the half-space too. I feel like Telles also has this potential, if only United can facilitate it.

  9. beautifull explanation
would love to see more such vids regarding other players too like theo hernandez, jordi alba , TAA , robertson , carvajal , renan lodi , etc

  10. I'm starting up as a coach for u15 and have a question for Guardiolas wing (not wingback) role – does the wings ALWAYS stay wide? And how much do the attacking wings work in defence? Would really appreciate if anyone would elaborate.

  11. I’ve been struggling of what type of player I am and some friends say fullback and others say hold midfielder but this is what I am and will be doing in any game I play
