Manchester City expert Steven McInerney from Esteemed Kompany has spoken to Sports Mole about whether Matheus Nunes can thrive as a midfielder in Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Portugal international has had to bide his time for first-team opportunities since arriving from Wolves in the summer of 2023, but he has impressed when called upon so far this season, contributing with one goal and three assists in his last two starts for the Citizens.

In the absence of injured duo Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku, Nunes has operated as a left winger in those two matches against Sparta Prague (5-0) and Southampton (1-0), but McInerney expects the 26-year-old to revert back to playing centrally when the former two return to fitness.

McInerney has also discussed whether Nunes has the credentials to reach the ‘absurd’ levels required to play centrally for Guardiola, who has been blessed with a plethora of midfield maestros at Man City including Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, David Silva and Yaya Toure.
