Total Football was dead. The eighties killed all hope, with its wing-back system, sweepers in the backline and rampant hooliganism and stadium disaster. Football needed a bit of light injected back into it, and so too did Ajax.
Johan Cruyff came back, and tried, but was quickly lured away by Barcelona again. Up step Louis van Gaal, a football war of philosophical ideas and Ajax’s Total Recall to the top of the European game.

What if Documentaries is YouTube’s only football magazine, with monthly issues of five videos each month on a topic as far back as the dominant Aston Villa team of the 1890s, as recently as Napoli’s stunning 2023 Scudetto winning team, as obvious as Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo and their litany of trophies, as obscure as Dynamo Moscow’s passovotchka football of the 40s. We’ve got it all.

With three Liverpool videos to come next week, which teams / eras should we cover in future videos?
You have the best football documentaries on YouTube, by far. How the f are you on less than 400 followers???
Great video, man. I wish he had been able to lead the Netherlands to victory in the last World Cup or in 2014, but still a legendary manager nonetheless.
Great video, but as an Ajax fan I couldn't help but notice some inaccuracies.
– Cruijf wasn't the manager anymore in the 1988 Cup Winners Cup final, he had left Ajax after clashing with the board in January.
– Louis van Gaal didn't step in to replace Beenhakker because he got fired, but because he signed for Real Madrid again.
Enjoyed the video nontheless, great work!
thx for covering this . most young fans have no clue how big Ajax is
That 95 Ajax team was Awesome. Rikjaard especially.
Threepeat? Silly American terms that have no place in football. They won three in a row. It just sounds better
Well, I would say the Champions League season with Koemand and the players Chivu, Vd Vaart, Zlatan, Maxwell, Trabelsi and on wasn't also very bad. Especially to survive to two CL poules, with clubs like Arsenal (with Bergkamp and Henry) and Valencia. Ajax is an unique football club, with her own style of playing and a sublime youth academy. It will always be my football club.
Great stuff mate . Cheers !
This is very interesting and informative
These documentaries are absolutely brilliant.
I'm a Man Utd fan and have been looking for books on Uniteds fallow period for a while, them documentaries have educated me so much.
Keep up the great work 👍🏼
80s wing backs? More confidently spoken nonsense on YouTube.😂
