  1. Juninho was a better player than Zola. At a Boro team who'd just got promoted. If he'd been at a Newcastle, Villa or even Tottenham it wouldn't even be an argument.

  2. There's no doubt football is less entertaining than it was. It has become more rigid and structured so flair players have been squeezed out. I blame Mourinho and Ferguson, they converted flair players like Joe Cole, Rooney and Ronaldo into machines.

  3. Systems football has destroyed things. Watching Chelsea in basically any match, or long parts of Arsenal v Man City it is just pass sideways or backwards, any pass forward usually results in a pass backwards. Take a free kick, pass back to keeper. It's dull, but the good news is that players that are inventive are going to be the game changers

  4. The problem is not the footballers. It’s the media and the fans. The reason why managers and players have stamped out individuality and flair is down to our obsession with perfection and the fear of being “bantered”.

  5. It’s because matches are 100mph now and the main tools required to compete are pace and athleticism. That’s what coaches are looking for and if you have them tools and can follow instruction well, you’ll stand a good chance of making it. I guarantee there are thousands of Zola’s, Ronaldinho’s, Bergkamp’s etc in the world but by the time they get to professional age they would have spent years in an academy being taught to play off a tactics board, watching hours of videos analysis and being encouraged to defend as much as they attack.

  6. No modern football gets statpadders like salah mbappe and bellingham for example
Who play rubbish most weeks and cover it up by getting GA
For eg salah great goal scorer but he now has better stats than maradona
Doesn't mean he is better than maradona is it?

  7. I am sure there will be many people that will say players have lost individuality.

I am sure when asked though, people will not be able to articulate what Zola had that players of today don't have.

The fact is that coaches are wiser to prevent players dominating games from behind the striker and defences are a lot more agile and quick than they ever used to be

  8. Rio Ferdinand once said no offence to today's players, but he was lining up against the likes of Raul, zidane, R9 Ronaldo, trezeguet, Henry, shearer, Del pierro and there's barely any players like that these days. The sad shame is he's actually right. You got a handful at best
