Oh boy…I'm always reluctant to be critical of support for Busquets, but the part about how he isn't there to shield the backline and how he doesn't tackle is just incorrect. Busquets is a high-volume tackler and also very accurate–and I say this b/c there is widely available data on his tackle rates & success. He also intercepts at a high frequency–again, these numbers are available. It is true that his positional awareness is extremely high, but that also doesn't mean just hanging back; it means he (generally) knows where everyone is on the pitch and can keep track of that very well. It is also true that he isn't like other DMs such as Kante or Casemiro BUT that is b/c he's more effective defending through pressing high, rather than tracking back in situations where there are many transitions (b/c he's slower than them). He is also more likely to get overpowered in physical duels b/c he's skinny. Despite this, if you look at his heatmaps, you will see that he actually covers a very wide area of the pitch, just like Kante and Casemiro. Where Busquets stands out from other people in his position is superior technical quality that allows him to evade press while being able to find forwards and build play through one/two-touch passing. Essentially he has the characteristics of two different types of players: a destroyer and a playmaker. Earlier in his career people focused too much on the former b/c Xavi & Iniesta were there, and now they focus too much on the latter b/c those two are gone. Such a great video. I just find your channel and dude, I am impressed. Sorry for my word, but your presentation seems "humble" but the content is RICH. I am struggling to understand many modern football terms. especially the box-to-box midfielder. But this video shows me how great this role is. I actually a bit annoyed by Busquet's diving and face covering while peeking incident back then. it was hilarious as it is embarassing to watch. but now I realized my small-minded understanding of his contributions to one of the Prime Barca squad. Its hard to shine beside great names like Xavi and Iniesta, but this guy keep his humble presence and consistency and still has every reason to stay at the main squad till this day.
