Liverpool and Arne Slot are bracing for key challenges in a crucial three-week period.
Liverpool’s commanding 5-1 victory over West Ham in the League Cup on Wednesday evening is set to create a scheduling headache following the next international break. The fourth-round draw has placed the Reds in an away match against Brighton, slated for either October 29 or 30. This sets up back-to-back encounters with Brighton, as Liverpool already has a Premier League home fixture against them on November 2.
The League Cup clash will take place just days after Liverpool’s trip to the Emirates to face Arsenal on October 27, meaning the Reds will be making multiple trips south in the same week. This new fixture arrives during what is arguably Liverpool’s most challenging period of the season.
The sequence begins with a home game against Crystal Palace on October 5, just before players depart for the second international break of the campaign.
Upon returning, Liverpool will host Chelsea on October 20, then travel to Germany to face RB Leipzig on October 23, followed by the Arsenal match. After the Brighton doubleheader, the Reds will welcome Bayer Leverkusen, managed by Xabi Alonso, for a crucial Champions League showdown on November 11.
This stretch could be pivotal for Liverpool, potentially shaping their Premier League and Champions League fortunes, as well as their chances in the Carabao Cup. Fortunately, head coach Arne Slot has access to one of the deepest Liverpool squads in years, allowing him to rotate the lineup if necessary.
At present, the only notable injuries are to goalkeeper Alisson and midfielder Harvey Elliott, though Alisson is expected to return soon. For the match against Arsenal, Slot could field a strong lineup: Alisson, Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Mohamed Salah.
Against Brighton in the cup, Slot could make wholesale changes, with a potential lineup of: Caoimhin Kelleher, Kostas Tsimikas, Jarell Quansah, Joe Gomez, Connor Bradley, Wataru Endo, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, and Federico Chiesa.
Liverpool isn’t the only Premier League title challenger with a tough fourth-round League Cup draw—Manchester City is set to face Tottenham Hotspur in what promises to be one of the more enticing ties of the round.
