West Ham would be absolutely crazy to entertain any transfer offer from Manchester United for midfielder Edson Alvarez.

On the face of it, new head coach Julen Lopetegui has something of a challenge on his hands with the West Ham midfield. Tomas Soucek appears unsuited to the Spaniard’s possession-based style of football, while Lucas Paqueta can’t be factored into team planning with any level of certainty.

Numerous tactical reports suggest that the former Real Madrid and Spain coach favours a system where his defensive midfielder is comfortable on the ball and proficient at filling in for defenders. This is because Lopetegui prefers his fullbacks to be deployed high up the pitch, placing extra emphasis on the CDM to cover defensively.

Edson Alvarez is absolutely perfect for that role and could be argued to be custom-made for Lopetegui’s tactics. The Mexican is one of the few players the new head coach does not have to worry about, allowing him to concentrate on other areas of the squad that need strengthening.

Selling Alvarez would create a whole new problem and task director of football Tim Steidten with finding yet another player. It’s common knowledge that Steidten has been prioritising the recruitment of two central defenders and a striker, which is believed to have taken up all of his time.

West Ham must robustly reject all advances for Alvarez. Manchester United may well see him as the answer to their defensive woes, but West Ham have enough to consider with Paqueta, Kudus, and Emerson all attracting interest from elsewhere.

Lopetegui left Wolverhampton Wanderers because he believed the club had not fully supported him. If the Hammers decide to sell Alvarez, we may well find ourselves with a very frustrated coach on our hands.

  1. Sell everyone that does not want to be at west ham as fast as possible with the fee we want. I like Aguerd but he does not want to be here. We are losing money in players that want out. Alvarez has told he is not keen on playing for us, if JLO does not think he is essential sell. We can not sell Paqueta before he is judged, no one would sanction the deal. I wish we could because he will not play another full season of footy for us.

  2. Man U don't want to pay ove £40/50 m so I don't think it will happen it all click bate
And even Man U fans are getting passed off with the number of players they being connected with

  3. We leaked in 71 goals last season. The worst in our Premiership history, and that was with Alvarez – the one piece of chewing gum that was still holding us together. Without him we would have let in a 100, the rest of our defence was that shite!

  4. I'm okay with alverez moving on. Gets booked so many times, we will always loose him at some point during the season. If any player wants to go then show them the door.

  5. Alvarez is good but there's better players than him out there that we could sign. I'd take Fofana over him any day. He can do what Alvarez does but he also offers more going forward. His stats are better & he is younger too. If we get £60m for Alvarez then that's good business as we bought him for £35m

  6. At least if he goes to Utd it guarantees us some free kicks around there box and with the world class one more free kick away to beat beckhams record jwp in the line up we will obv benefit from selling Alvarez!! You gotta love West Ham every days a disaster in the making, let’s all try and have a more positive attitude this season it’s all just paper talk at the moment!

  7. I have a suspicion that Alvarez is a smokescreen for someone else to go to Utd. Although I can fully believe that Ten Hag will want Alvarez, I don’t think we will sell, unless it’s a substantial number. Around £60m would be enough for Sullivan. Steitden will back himself to get a cheaper replacement who can do a job.

  8. Yeah Gonzo. At this moment I see Man utd as a direct competitor. It hasn't been the case for much of the past and it may not be the case in future. But right now we shouldn't be improving their team. And we've certainly got enough on Tim's plate this summer already.

  9. If we're adopting the Brighton model, then this is proper business. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but if this is the project and we do it right, then it's a legitimate route to achieving glory without gazillionaire owners.

  10. I know JWP was on the cusp of tie-ing (or bettering?) David Beckham's record for free kick goals when he joined WHU. Did he score even a single free kick goal for us in all competitions last season?

  11. If united offer 50-60mil I think it would be silly to turn down. And with comments he’s made previously regarding his future here it seems he’s open to moving. So let him go for a good fee and reinvest

  12. So the 3 players you said we really shouldn't sell – Kudus, Alvarez and Bowen, have all been linked with clubs and moves the past 2 weeks 😬 i hate to jinx but… 😂 I'm messing obviously lol 😂

  13. We already need 8 players that's a lot of new players to integrate with the current squad. To then sell players and have to integrate more is very risky, it could take 6 months before they gel at which point your in a relegation battle. We should not sell any players other than players that want to leave or players that J Lo doesn't want

  14. That's crazy, why d'feck would he want to go to Manure & sit on the bench? They're now just a mid table Fergie tribute act team of overpaid players with weight problems & a collapsing stadium needing £1 billion for a rebuild.
Without european games & Tim free to be a stockbroker & a new Lollypopgoo set up means we've now got more of a realistic chance of top 6 & winning a cup.
I can even see Hen Tag getting the shoe well before xmas.👍 ⚒

  15. I completely agree with you Gonzo. Why create new problems when we have enough already. I agree he's probably going improve further, and arguably feature more, under Lopetegui.
You're right that good as Tim and his people are, they can't manufacture people to fit in when someone goes. Wish there was a "Wierd Science" footballer machine. Programme in what you want and press start. But ManCity would probably have snapped it up along with all the rights and patents too! 😢

I'd hate to lose Alverez, Emerson, Kudus, Areola or Bowen. They are the hat rack that the others will hang on.
