The brilliance of Liverpool’s transfers as their new players receive recognition.
Liverpool may have made a brilliant transfer move this summer after their new signing, Giorgi Mamardashvili, was included among the Yashin Trophy nominees. The award, presented alongside the Ballon d’Or, honors the best goalkeeper in the world and is named after legendary Soviet Union goalkeeper Lev Yashin. Mamardashvili, currently on loan at Valencia, is in the running for the prize, which will be decided in October.
He faces tough competition from nine other top goalkeepers, including Diogo Costa (Porto), Gianluigi Donnarumma (PSG), Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund), Andriy Lunin (Real Madrid), Mike Maignan (AC Milan), Emi Martinez (Aston Villa), Unai Simon (Athletic Bilbao), Yann Sommer (Inter Milan), and Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns).
Mamardashvili, a 23-year-old Georgia international, is the youngest nominee this year and is seen as a potential long-term option for Liverpool’s goalkeeping future. Liverpool secured his transfer for an initial £25 million, plus £4 million in potential add-ons, before loaning him back to Valencia.
Having made over 100 appearances in La Liga, Mamardashvili is set to arrive at Anfield next summer, where he’ll likely face stiff competition for the starting spot. For now, Valencia’s manager, Ruben Baraja, is happy to keep him for another season.
“The club made a significant sale for the financial health of the organization, and from a sporting perspective, we still have him,” Baraja said. “He will aim to have a strong season and be crucial for the team. I’ve always said that if a player is on the market and the club deems it appropriate, we must adapt. For now, it’s positive that he remains with us given the situation.”
While many see Mamardashvili as a potential successor to Alisson, the young goalkeeper’s talent might push him to challenge sooner rather than later. However, Alisson recently reaffirmed his commitment to Liverpool, with his contract running until 2026 and an option for another year.
“I want to honor my contract here or maybe even sign a new one,” Alisson said. “I’m really happy at Liverpool, and so is my family. When the interest from Saudi Arabia came, I did consider it, but my focus was always on staying here and contributing to this exciting new chapter for the club.
“If the club ever wants to discuss my future, we can, but for now, I’m fully focused on my job and life at Liverpool.”
