Despite the signing of Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich this summer, we’ve started the season with a familiar face in Harry Maguire. Everyone saw De Ligt as the answer, and there seems to be some debate online about just who is going to be our starting centre-half partnership this season. Does it include De Ligt? Or Harry Maguire? It’s an interesting debate to be had (surely with an obvious answer).

Another thing to keep in mind why De Ligt is not starting is that his last full game was the last game day of the Bundesliga on the 18th of May and after that he only started in a friendly for the Netherlands on June 6th. He didn’t play in the EURO and hasn’t partaken in any of Bayern’ pre-season matches.
There is no way he was fully match fit when he signed for United. Probably also something ETH has taken into account.

De-ligt & other defenders were standing & protecting right side of the goal. Left side there were no defenders, where 3 Brighton players accumulated & oneof them scored from header. Lack of "football/defending intelligence"(which most ManU defenders were guilty of in this goal sequence).
So he has to develop that intelligence to keep scanning to see where the danger is more. Let's hope he does.
I'm cool with having Maguire as defensive backup and for bringing on from the subs bench when there are 15 minutes to go and the opposition is lumping high balls into our box. There may even be games when having Maguire starting might be a good option. But that being said I still panic when he has the ball because his decision-making with the ball is "basic"

agree with your view Steve but the sooner we get these potentially better players in the sooner we see an improved united and that includes Yoro over Martinez when fit.

Maguire turns like a tanker, looking forward to playing agile CB's.
Harry Maguire is not a bad player but hes very limited for a team that wants to play out from the back and push high, on the ball hes a little too slow and often lacks awareness, meaning he gets caught out. That first goal against Brighton, he needs to do something with that ball which is fine mistakes happen but its not an isolated incident, he has a place in the squad

Comparing Maguire and De Ligt's stats is fun but not accurate as they played in different leagues with different playing styles. Maguire has better defensive numbers because he defender a lot more than De Ligt. De Ligt has better passing numbers because he had the ball a lot more than Maguire. Context
