After Gregg Berhalter dropped a Bombshell about Gio Reyna in an “off-the-record” conference, the Athletic published an article detailing multiple issues about Giovanni Reyna’s apparent lack of commitment/intensity in training that led to him nearly being sent home from the World Cup. Tac and I break down, what we know, what might have happened, and what this means for the USMNT, Gregg Berhalter and Gio Reyna moving forward.

  1. 2 days ago: Why didn't Gio play?? Berhalter should be fired for not playing his best player! Berhalter has no idea what he's doing! We want answers! We know you're lying, tell us the truth! Fire him now!

Berhalter tells the truth and explains in a respectful manner.

Now: We can't believe you told us what we've been screaming to know! How dare you! Berhalter should be fired!

Some people you just can't make happy….

  2. I feel like it’s good this didn’t come out during play for USA. It would’ve been a giant distraction even more than we already had. I feel this is mostly on Gregg. Geo has room to grow. But still I would play who tried the hardest. Sorry.

  3. It seems to me that US Soccer got info of this delayed upcoming article but did not know what was in it and so intentionally leaked these "off the record" remarks by Gregg to pre-empt anything in the article that may paint Gregg as the bad guy

  4. Gio sounds like a whiny child. I see no issue with this article. Pete, you yourself were calling for more information on why Gio didn't play.

  5. the USA has got good talent guys …. This team needed a balance of experience and youth , for example I wish Darlington nagbe would have been in the line up as a holding midfielder , he has the best touch of any US player I have ever seen . nagbe could have been what modric is to Croatia, experienced and skilled ,guiding and pulling all the strings ….Also Brooks should have been commanding the defensive line without a doubt . For me weah should have been a number 9 through out the tournament.. Aaronson is a direct 10 providing that creativity and attack mindedness from the midfield … These are basic 4-3-3 stretagies … let me share what I believe the best line up would have been ….

    …………………….Weah ………………..
    Pulisc ………………………………….Reyna
    ………….aaronson ………..mckenni
    ……………………….nagbe………….

    Robinson….ream….brooks…….yedlin

The other guy that they should try to poach is Thomas tuchel, these guys are good scouts and know how to play football and will utilise every bit of talent around … Gregg for me is useless … The USA have got good enough players challenge these other strong teams ….. Gregg is so pathetic ….. How did a player like Jesus Ferreira get on the plan , the guy literally looks scared … Gregg is the initial cause of the attitude issues with Reyna had … Ohh so the attitude thing disappeared immediately after the usmnt was 2 nil down against the Netherlands? Why didn't it disapear before kickoff ? Ask yourself this question …. Why throw in a player with attitude when u are 2 nil down …. Have u ever seen messi get pissed of after getting substituted ? Yes , because these are talented players , it's the job of the coach to caress such talents and not be authoritative .

  6. "Just so you know, Gio… you'll get very few minutes in this tournament. Now run along and give 110% in this scrimmage against a 2-bit circus side, or I'll have Aaron Long come talk to you about showing more effort."

  7. gregg is the worst he plays favorites lie has problems with any player who questions him and makes it public after it was suppose to over the players should call a meeting and say we will not play for gregg

  8. I don't even agree with how Gregg handled it initially. Bringing the issue to the entire team involves every one of them in the drama. The coach should be reducing the noise around the team as much as possible in order to allow the players a singular focus. If Gregg couldn't calm the issue with Reyna himself, I think he should have gone to the captain or the player most likely to 'reach' Gio. Ask that player to take Gio aside and speak with him privately.

  9. Its from The Athletic, another slimeball news outlet owned by none other then the NYT. The fact that they are reporting on OTR material is a testament to their integrity and bias. They are on Gregg's side, that is not a good look alone.

  10. I think Gio not trusting GGG is a given. But from the other players points of view, how would you ever have any trust in him. And wherever GGG ends up, can those players have trust in him? Pretty sure the players of new team are going to do a bit of research into their new coach. Not a good situation for a new team either. So weird that a guy hoping to further his career makes such an idiotic move. Bye bye Gregg, don't let the door hi ya!

  11. If the Federation chooses to give GGG a new contract and another cycle…..well then the Federation can go to hell. As a long time USMNT supporter who travels to multiple games per year that would be the last straw for me. Here's the truth, he NEVER should have even gotten the job in the first place. HIs resume reads a MLS coach with a failed European stint (at a smaller club) who's BROTHER is an EXECUTIVE within the US Federation and almost definitely pushed for GGG to be hired in the first place. That underqualified coach then proceeded to take one of the most talented player pools the USMNT has ever had and BARELY escaped a relatively easy group. He had to cling for life in the second half against Iran and Wales. He then proceeds to get thoroughly outcoached and TORCHED in the first game of the knockout rounds.

Remind me again, what exactly did GGG accomplish here because in my book he'll go down as one of the worst coaches this program has ever had…..relative to his available talent pool and the favorable WC group draw he received.

He CANNOT be retained. He CANNOT be allowed to ruin this up and coming generation of talent. Reyna is a HELL of a lot more important to this program than a second rate underqualified coach who never should have even been given this opportunity in the first place.

  12. This kids Ego is out of order, the way he went about seems like he's full of himself and not even considering the team before the world cup and during the world cup. I don't think Greggs the right guy moving forward for the USMNT, however backing this kid with his out of order Ego is not good for him or the USMNT. Whoever is advising Geo should tell him to just shut up and focus on his game, hell be a constant starter in the USMNT's coming comps, but if he doesn't change, no matter which new coach is hired, they will all side line him. Despite his talent, he's also obviously achieved nothing for the USMNT, so he's entitled for no reason at all.
