For years, the media have been telling the world what a best friend Messi had in Aguiro. Such a best friend that every WC and continental tournament that Aguero appeared alongside Messi, the former would flub at the most critical moment to deprive Messi of a title. This s**t happened consistently for years. (Higuain was just as bad.). During that whole time, the one unsung hero who gave his all and really went to the finish line for Messi was no other than Angel di Maria. It took quite a while but Messi finally woke up to the reality as to who was his most reliable partner (of the same generation as Messi himself) in the front line.
