Who do you think should manage the USMNT?
Ecuador almost beat Argentina and the next day their coach was still fired
You worship Europe. There is soccer outside of that continent
Incredibly well stated summary of Gregg’s tenure and the current moment. Thanks.
Everyone get ready for another MLS coach
The way a manager carries himself dictates how the team will perform. US soccer will succeed once it adopt the maxim that defines the country. E PLORIBUS UNUM out of many one, we are a nation of immigrants and we need an INTERNATIONAL manager that knows the game and has WON at different levels. We need a coach from SPAIN, ITALY, or GERMANY.
We need a field marshall……. WE NEED KLOPP 🎉🎉
Bring Jurgen back. He started this process years ago.
Football as the hero's quest! I almost swallowed my beer bottle! Your emotion in this piece is palpable. The honestly too. Thanks. Kep going.
What about Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Took a underperforming Man untd and made into a transitional/counter attacking side that punch above its weight multiple times
Quebueno que lo cambiaron es
Bueno eso no damas
American could really use a Pep talk
We need Poch!!
Corrupt Federation doesn't have any sense of football, they take care of their buddies and as a private organization they have the name of a nation and its football fans as hostages. I am not optimistic about any decision that will come out of this rotten federation and if they make a similar pick to Berhalter, I am done following this team against my deepest desires to support the National Team!!
You asked the self-evident reason for Berhalter's hiring to be placed in the comments. Here it is: his big brother's position. It wasn't about money or talent, it was about nepotism.
Maybe it took 14 m to hire GB because those ideal European managers said no.
Modern era, players choose their coaches and kids get the teachers they hate fired.
Whether it's Messi or LeBron James, they choose the coaches they want to play for, and if you want to get the best out of them, you need to listen to their feedback.
23:44 Qatar didn't have any qualifiers leading up to their world cup, and they come over to concacaf and played in our gold cup to temper their team with some competitive games and not just scheduling friendlies. USA needs to get in afcon or the asian cup or something because we're gonna need it to get everyone really competitive match fit for the world cup
Herve ranard plz
Herve Renard
Poetic, passionate, and intelligent as always. I really enjoyed this. I feel like it cannot be an American. There will be so much unneeded pressure placed on them regardless of their football acumen. They already will have the prodigious pressure of hosting a WC they don’t need the Bethalter Redux tag that will inevitably come from this kind of hire.
What the hell are you talking about. He made them worse. He made them accept mediocre play. They beat up on concacaf thats it. You need to get a new job kf you belived he helped usa soccer. Exiling brooks killed the defence
North America is AA MLB ball….
Pellegrino Matarazzo would be my first choice for this team. He seems to get the best out of his players in trying situations.
No MLS coaches need apply. Get someone who coaches in the big leagues. Likely better to select someone from the English Premier League for culture/language fit. But to be honest we also have to clear out the entire org and start with proven winners at the highest levels.
With such a disfunctional federation, entitled players who think they are god's gift, and wasted run up prep for the world cup, anybody who wants the job at this point in the schedule probably shouldn't have it. And I think it's a good bet that management is nowhere close to being prepared to properly search/find a new manager. So, unfortunately, we should probably not be focused on 2026, but rather 2030 at this point. That likely means another caretaker manager for 2026. Meh.
Sometimes you focus too much on the wrong things to build a team, then you end up with something that looks like a team but it's not.
How do we tell the difference?
The Results.
If a coach tells me he did a great job or the best possible job building a national team, I will have to reserve judgment until I see the final product. We apply the same standard to everything and we always figure it out correctly.
If the final product, be it a Cellphone or a Soccer Team or a Sandiwich, is good i.e. we observe and judge, then yes Gregg Berhalter or the Deli-man or the engineer created a good product.
But if the team loses 5-1 in America to Columbia in a friendly, then the 3rd game loses to Panama 2-1 (end game a fluke) then the 4th game loses to Uruguay 1-0, all on home soil in America, then there is something wrong with that product. It may not be the Coach but the Coach is the HEAD of the Team. That's why we hire coaches to tell the players what to do and how to do it.
If the players refuse to do what the coach told them, that's why we give the coach the authority to select the players.
So in this example either Mr Gregg Berhalter selected bad players, or good players don't don't listen to me, or he doesn't know what he's doing.
We need a logical explanation to the 5-1 and the other 2 loses here at home, otherwise there no meaning to talking and analyzing.
Let's see if the new coach will do better than Berhalter.
Sometimes the coach or players need to be changed.
The Coach changes players.
The Federation changes coaches
etc..
Lets hope that the change will give us a better team or a better product.
GO USA GO
Good Job Matt Crocker for making the tough and courageous decision of changing coaches.
Good luck in finding a better coach for the USMNT like you did for the USWMNT.
Great Job on hiring Emma Hayes 👍
Good Luck to England Tomorrow in the Euro Final.
Spain will be a tough opponent.
No favorite in the Copa America Final.
Here is what doesn't make sense on Gregg Berhalter's record.
– We're being told by some he did a great job with the USMNT
– We hear from others that this is the Golden Generation
– And we hear that the USMNT is now a strong national team
We have to see evidence of the above, i.e. matches results.
The numbers of games lost is 15 in the first 4 years, than 7 in the last year and a half..
So,
Does qualifying for the world cup makes you a great coach or so so coach or was it luckk?
Does losing 22 games in 5 years and half make you a great Team, the best in Concacaf?
Is losing on home soil to Columbia 5-1 and two more games after that in copa America what the USSF planned for when the hired or rehired Gregg?
Of course the answer is NO, so why do some observers try to create something big out of the ordinary?
If Gregg Berhalter is a Great Coach we should see that in the USMNT's results
If he's the best ever then why didn't he at least match Bruce Arena's record of 2002 when we player the Quarter Final.
At some point, we must all move on and get more ambitious.
Don't keep asking for Ham n Egg but sometimes judge it by the standards of Steak n Egg, they're two different plates different products different quality level.
Had the USMNT just Tied Panama and Uruguay, Gregg would still be the Head Coach.
So instead of progressing after 2022 we regressed, who responsibility is that?
Some coaches must raise their Ambition level, and man up to the responsibility.
The US FANS don't want the same Ham n Egg, they have a more Ambitious Appetite.
They want to be like England in the Final
Like Morocco in the Semifinal
The US FAN understands enough to know that New England Clam Chowder is White Sauce and the Red Sauce one is Manhattan Baby. They have a good taste in Soccer and the rest of the Media landscape needs to stop talking to them as they they don't understand.
They understand that the USMNT regressed under Gregg Berhalter.
We all like Gregg but SHOW ME THE RESULTS
SHOW ME THE RESULTS USMNT like does the USWMNT.
Why is it that our Women give us the best results always, and even them accept the criticism when we point to their Coach. We see no rejection whatsoever from the USSF when it comes to the USWMNT.
There is a general culture surrounding the USMNT (I don't know who) leading our Men team to basically low standards such as considering qualifying to the world Cup a Great achievement.
1994 is long gone and the current Soccer Fan generation wants a better product from the USMNT like does the USWNT. If our Women can do it, so should our Men.
At least make it to the Quarter Finals more often.
I don't think Bruce Arena wants his record to remain unbeaten.
More Ambition higher goals more success
Forward
9:08
That's it.
We failed more often than not, to adapt our tactics to the opponent.
We succeeded in 2002 because Bruce Arena did that in 2002 against Portugal especially.
We didn't adapt our tactics against Holland in 2022.
We're learning, but we need to get more ambitious and stop defending Coaches based on whom we like in spiate of the metrics of their record.
I think 22 loses with Berhalter is a bad record.
If we lose 3 games per year, in 5.5 years that's only 17 games.
I believe we can have a record of losing no more than 1 or 2 games per year.
That will set a standard for the players so they know they're on a USMNT that REFUSE TO LOSE. To steal a page from the Italians or the Germans.
We have to aim higher, Quarter Final in the World Cup at least, or the Semifinal.
In 2022 under Berhalter we defeated Morocco 3-0 in a Friendly, the same National Team that went on and reached the Semi Final in the World Cup, playing all 7 games.
That's the kind of Ambition, and a Realistic Ambition, we must have.
We shouldn't tell the USMNT 22 loses in 5.5 years is a good record, it's actually unacceptable.
The USMNT needs to have a record in 2026, something on the level of being unbeatable that year before the World Cup.
You are right on almost all your points.
The Players choosing or vouching for the Coach, point:
Even if you have a team that won the World Cup, we should still have a problem with the concept that a players who influence the hiring or rehiring of a coach would be good.
I don't think it works on a club level, and nobody should think it works on a National Team level.
I do however think that the players can have an input, but the decision or.. should stay in the hands of the USSF.
The USSF or Matt Crocker should follow the USMNT Players on Social Media to get a sense of what they like or don't like about their Coach, but just to keep the train going in the same direction.
11:30
Excellent 👍
I think the regular US Fan senses that very point.
You can see that the USMNT under Gregg Berhalter 2.0 doesn't represent the American Identity. No Grit whatsoever against Columbia in the 5-1 or against Panama in the 2-1, losses.
It's very very very obvious that Grit helps win games even on the MLS level.
A player should give more to the National Team then to the Club, and how did Gregg miss this point, he knows very well that Grit wins and Players must give more to the National Team vs Clubs ????
Canada showed more Grit than the USMNT, and they reached the Semifinal.
So why?
Canada coached by American Jesse Marsch.
USMNT coached by Gregg Berhalter 2.0
Why didn't the USSF hire Jesse Marsch ???????????????
Who led the USSF or led Matt Crocker to re-hire Gregg and reject Jesse?
We the Fans don't know all the details so it's not our job to accept responsibility for losing Jesse, so the USSF should look inside and correct its course if there are officials in there who misled it to reject Jesse Marsch. The Right Coach was there but you didn't hire him!!!
Who in the USSF cause Matt Crocker to sign Gregg and not Jesse as USMNT Coach?
Who?
That individual(s) should lose the influence they have, I'm not going to say lose their job.
Nepotism is a F*CKING Problem that causes FAILURE.
Nepotism = Corruption
ENG vs NLD
Everybody (almost) thought the Netherlands will beat England, and for a second after the start of the match it looked that way. But, because the ENG Coach remained positive and the ENG team made the necessary adjustments, when they got the chance to tie the game they did so.
So in this example, all you needed to do is remain Positive, Fight Back, and look for opportunities to score on the Netherlands. When the chance game at the 90th minute for the ENG Sub, he put it in the net, then everything became clear. England could Win.
Lets see if they can beat Spain, and in soccer anybody can beat anybody any day.
The 5-1 loss against Columbia was a warning, but what could you have done in so little time before Copa America?
Had the USSF fired Gregg after the 5-1, if the USMNT did bad with the new coach, then the Blame will go the USSF and Matt Crocker.
You have to give a Coach a chance, lets be realistic.
I think the rehiring process was weak especially that you had as candidate Jesse Marsch in front of you. As I said we Fans don't know the details but I can now say Jesse is better for the current USMNT than Gregg
Who at the USSF was against hiring Jesse?
That USSF Official should lose influence in the Coach Hiring Process, at the least.
And Nepotism should be a Firing offense, i.e. don't recommend your brother and if he fails expect to stay in the same position. This is not Highschool.
If any USSF official interferes to facilitate the hiring of a bad coach, that official should get demoted.
We reward success and penalize failure, that's how we progress forward.
So many good points. I think all your main questions can be answered with two words ignorance and incompetence. USSF leadership is ignorant and incompetent. They don’t know what they don’t know and they have no interest in learning more. The priority is always on profit instead of the romance of growing the game. Growth to them is making more money not actually becoming more competitive. The team played with no COMMITMENT, watch the South American teams they play with intent and aggression and know they will be portrayed as villains if they fail. The players here know that they will be protected by everyone if any fan insults them on social media and can play themselves as a victim. Not the case in other countries except England which probably explains the reason why they never win either.
Yes, with the exception of the World Cup Americans, forget that the US is mostly playing home games. Canadian and we are constantly playing away games. The advantage this gives the USA is really significant. And as the caster says, you have to know your level. The Americans have deceived themselves of what their level is. They are very good team. Man for man they are better than our Canadian team with a couple of exceptions. But it makes a difference when you’re playing on home field advantage all the time. Need to get expectations in line and stop being so hard on the US men’s national team for for not being as good as Uruguay or Columbia or Brazil, etc. That is not their level. They may be there one day in the future, but not yet as Christian Jack of 1 soccer in Canada says, it’s cruel how the US is being treated by its pets. And this is because the expectations are too high. The US does not have a single world class player on its team. And again it’s Christian Jack says, like MLS has not produced such a player yet for the US. That gives you something to ponder after decades of this being an existence. I like the US team, they are talented with the right coach and a different mentality in the organization, they could eventually go far. I think there’s one other issue. The US men’s national team is very well funded, and the players are paid more if I’m not mistaken in any other national team to play. It’s a full on business model. I think Americans are used to getting what they paid for, and that in a sense is what is wrong with this whole model. You pay your money and expect to get top quality, but it just doesn’t quite work that way in soccer.
What are your thoughts about Zidane?
Raj, ‘Brotherhood’ is Greg’s greatest legacy? So basically, Greg didn’t do jack because these kids grew up together.
What’s are your thoughts on Gareth Southgate?
As a Canadian i'm happy we got American Jesse Marsch managing our men's program.
would be funny if they hire John Herdman
