Even Arteta realised Rice is not a number 6. So why would he be one for England? He’s a water carrier at best in that position blocking and passing backwards and sideways. What he is not is a tempo setter or progressive passer.

Unfortunately the stats prove that Rice is not playing well for England at the Euros! He is not contributing to any attacks – 95% of his passes are backwards or sideways. His heatmap for the first 2 games was so deep that he was sitting alongside the CBs. This could be Southgate telling him to stay back but we have decent defence and should trust them more. Rice needs to be more positive for England. We all know Rice is quality so lets see that for England. We dont need 5 defenders against these mediocre teams.
