Euro 2024: Holders Italy survive early scare to beat Albania

uh well Mark you have to say fair play to Albania there for uh you know scoring a goal against the reigning Champions but par was soon restored wasn’t it and Italy got the result they wanted yeah yeah just uh great to see I was enjoying watching that c go in 23 seconds in just Albania’s second appearance at the Euros uh after 2016 they failed to get out of the group uh during that competition uh not really many people would have given them a chance because look at the group they’re in it looks incredibly difficult to get out and the fact that they scored 23 seconds in last night is an achievement in itself uh because they’d only scored once in a major tournament before yesterday and that was a pretty significant goal 23 seconds the record that stood before that was actually 67 seconds um and that was done back in 2004 as well uh quite amazing I don’t think that record of 23 will ever get broken uh the goal that was scored in 67 seconds was Dimitri kirichenko for Russia against Greece back in the Euros of 2004 so barami I think we’ll have that record for some time um so yeah despite the great start it wasn’t the result that they would have hoped for but nonetheless certainly something to build on a bit of positivity and as you saw from the clip there s came so close to getting an equalizing goal as well so yeah definitely interesting to see how Albania get on they did get close to scoring an equalizer so what does that say about Italy the defending Champions they looked a bit nervy at times didn’t they yeah a little bit nervy not quite at their best um but a very different Italy side to the one that we’ve come to expect uh when it comes to major tournaments they’re going for a little bit of a transitional period at the moment uh of course Roberto manini left to go and manage in the Saudi pro league so therefore you’ve got a little bit of a change with regards to the manager obviously Luciano spalti coming in he’s tried to change the style ever so slightly and the reason why we’ve got this 1.84 up here this is goals per game at the Euros now historically you’d see Italy is a very solid hardworking defens defensively you pick me to it defensively minded side um where they were just about being solid don’t concede a goal try and win the game one nil you don’t see many exciting g games with Italy they’re always very tactical you always see their Defenders high five in clearing the ball or blocking a shot don’t you that’s what they they’re known for that that’s what they love they love to keep a clean sheet they love to be defensively solid before yesterday’s game Italy’s 45 matches at the Euros had produced 1.84 goals between both sides on average in 45 games at the Euros which is the lowest ratio of any of the 25 five teams to have taken part by playing 10 or more games so the fact that you had three goals inside 16 minutes I think that tells you a little bit about how they’ve transitioned to maybe not being quite a defensively minded side but one that will go forward and attack as well so yeah I think that’s quite interesting although the fact that they ground out the result in the end and they showed some good defensive qualities shows that they still have that little bit of Steel and defensive minded attributes within that team yeah so really interesting in stuff there had loads of injuries as well that they’ve had to contend with as a couple of players that have retired as well so very transitional side but first group game only thing that matters three points on the board and that’s what spetti has done [Music]

Reigning champions Italy came from behind to beat plucky Albania 2-1 in their Euro 2024 opener in Dortmund.

The holders – who beat England on penalties to win the tournament in 2021 – were stunned when Nedim Bajrami took advantage of a poor throw-in to put Sylvinho’s side in front with the fastest goal in European Championship history after just 23 seconds.

  1. She says Italy are a tough watch and gives such a derogative look to them …. Maybe England losing against Iceland at Wembley a few days ago were a much better watch? These pundits do not even know what they are talking about. How and why they are chosen will always remain a mystery. Italy played well and may lose the next match, who knows, but in this Country they will always be seen as lucky, defensive and boring. They are far from that

  2. If they ask you professionals to analyze a game You clearly didn’t watch, just don’t,
It is very disrespectful to analyse a game utilizing Italian football stereotypes which spalletti is very far
    Italy played a controlled game

  3. Italy won Against Albania but spain Played and win against Croatia like a monster poor performance was for Croatia and monstrous performance of spain they could have scored 5

  4. Every tournament since 2006: “this isn’t the traditionally defensive Italian team we’ve been used to seeing”. Guys at some point you have to admit that Italy hasn’t been this catenaccio side since the early nineties. Do your homework or stop pushing a false narrative!

  5. Always the English to talk like this about Italy and then who goes and wins the tourney and playing exciting football mind u. Italy won last tourney playing so of the best football of the competition, and they’re just butthurt still is what that shows 😂

  6. First min and last minute nervy. 88 minutes complete dominance. Another set of morons talking complete nonsense. Not played defensive since 1990, absolute village reporting. Transitional team with 5 players in starting 11 that played in the final, Bastoni, Di Marco, Scamacca and Frattesi with circa 20 caps each and only Califriori with little experience.

  7. As an Albanian feeling very disappointed with my team . They didn't play well at all. That wasn't even close to the best Albania. To easy for Italy , game dominated by the Italian with very little opposition by Albanian. I hope we change something next game or will be disaster.

  8. How you two have a job in this industry is mind boggling. Nervy and not at their best ? First half was a clinic besides the schoolboy error from Dimarco, it should have been 4
