They don’t work together. Mainoo isn’t mobile enough and both of them were to advanced which is why Iceland scored in the first place. Rice should be in the 6 witj maybe Gallagher and Bellingham. Gallagher is not as good technically as Mainoo but he is an absolute machine and will constantly press. Having trippier at lb is killing us as well we need shaw to be fit

It was the most ineffective midfield partnership. Wharton should be alongside Rice. Plays much quicker, has better positional discipline and is a way better passer of the ball than Mainoo.
Mainoo isnt ready. Trent in the middle with rice for me. Put foden on the left and Bellingham in the middle. Saka needs to start on the right. Gordon was too wasteful on the cross. Palmer came inside too much

Midfield should be – Foden , Rice and Bellingham. Bellingham is a natural complete midfielder . Strong and has vision. Foden has been playing in midfield for Pep. Player of the year. I was taught in the Shankly Academy at Huddersfield that games are won and.lost in midfield. Vision is paramount. Bellingham has it. I fear Southgate is about to make a decisive error. Dont trust him.
