  1. Saying that the GK situation makes logical sense is a choice. Interesting to learn about the Michelle contract

  2. Tim’s been pretty vocal about how logical the Manu extension was and I just can’t get there. Yes she has statistically improved in certain aspects of her game (claiming crosses, short distribution) but she’s also declined in certain areas, esp. shot-stopping (her post-shot xG numbers have all gone down from last year). Some of this is also admittedly visual – she just seems slower and less athletic than she did two seasons ago when she was starting every match.

Best way I can say it is that when Khiara Keating made all those saves to secure the FA Cup win a couple of weeks ago, I immediately thought “there’s no way Manu could make those saves”.

I once served Stillman and his wife at a café I used to work at some years back and they were both horrendously rude to me and other staff members. Love what he’s done for AWFC but I feel like mentioning it every once in a while when I see his name.

  4. On the Manu situation (and Tim’s read of it), there are a few/ a lot lol of things I would say:

    – I think there is a tendency to conflate an appreciation, or lack thereof, of Manu as a person — she’s lovely, is passionate about the club, a great teammate, etc. — and her on-field contributions. People aren’t critical of her because they have an axe to grind. They/we just don’t think she’s at the level needed.
    – Maybe Tim is less familiar with the GK position and goalkeepers in general, based on how impressed he was after his interview with Manu. IMO, she didn’t say anything that any pro keeper wouldn’t say. Her ‘mentality’ did not come across as anything unique.
    – If you look at the top 4 teams, we have the least impressive GK.
    – Manu is 28, not 21. There are certain coachable things she should have a better command of at this point. And her competition in club and country has not actually been that challenging, so she’s not exactly uncomfortable.
    – Athleticism can only be trained so much. She’s just not as athletic as other GK’s. Doesn’t move as fast or jump as well. NOT her fault, just a limitation.
    – Manu’s lack of bravery impacts the whole team, especially the defenders. That unit has to trust in each other, and when you have a GK you can’t be sure of — is she coming for the cross? Will she drop it? Will she challenge this 1v1 or stop halfway? — it adds a layer of uncertainty that impacts others’ performance. And, as in the West Ham game, it must be a bit demoralizing to know 1 shot too often = 1 goal.

Sorry for the long diatribe. I get going about this topic (obviously) lol. Don’t downvote me…I really do love Manu as a person!

    Edit: spelling
