>The 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States will be the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, up from 32 teams at every World Cup since 1998 – but that’s not the only change.

The 2026 World Cup will be longer, feature far more games, and it will see a brand new group stage, qualifying, and knockout format.

In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at the new FIFA World Cup format from the 2026 tournament onwards, the magnitude of the reforms that have been introduced, why they’ve been brought in, and what it means for various national teams and the future of the World Cup.

Not sure why it’s considered insane? Bunch of third place teams advance and we get a round of 32. Pretty much the main differences

  2. 32 teams was already a fucking stretching in terms of teams who deserve to be there, but at least it was a very convenient number in terms of cup format.

48 teams is going to seriously degrade the quality of the competition. I mean, Italy might even get a spot for christ’s sake.

  3. It’s gonna suck the World Cup is no longer elite football. There’s gonna be a ton of garbage teams and bad matches.

FIFA are just hell bent on destroying the world cup.

Didn’t watch the video, but I like the new format and number of teams. There will be blow outs, but that has been the case already in every World Cup. I don’t buy the diluted competition either because by the quarter final all the weak teams are weeded out anyway. I think countries making the WC for the first time will be exciting for them and it will help grow the game.
