Goals from Conor Gallagher and Enzo Fernandez secured a late win for Chelsea against Crystal Palace this week. But the game was also remarkable for Mauricio Pochettino’s side breaking the Premier League record for the number of passes made without having a single shot on goal.

So how does a team find a teammate over 400 times, without creating a single chance in the process? Adam Clery explains that the problem is in their use (or misuse) of Enzo Fernandez.

  1. I really feel like Chelsea doesn’t take a look at YouTube media for potential criticism of their strategies. It could be really helpful for poch and some of the squad to sit down and take into consideration some of the more reputable channels have to say. They constantly ignore any criticism of their tactics and just play mediocre ball.

  2. I only saw the first half before my connection crapped out, but there were two things that were hard to miss. First, their tactics sucked. They were clearly trying to overload the flanks, but with Palace in a 4-5-1 that was never going to happen. Additionally, while trying to stretch Palace they ended up stretching themselves: every time somebody got the ball in the middle of the pitch the nearest teammate was miles away, so they just gave it back to the defense.

Second, they were gutless on the ball. Their attackers made good runs, but nobody tried to pass it into space and make Palace turn. Enzo tried a few times, but he just put the ball out each time. At least he tried. I'm not sure what Madueke was for. Caicedo spent half the time splitting his own centerbacks.

  3. I can see why Poch is resistant to play Enzo deeper. Chelsea are leaking a lot of goals and Enzo is a passenger defensively. If Chelsea get broken on, he may as well not be there. Chelsea looked better when Gallagher played DM at the start of the season. I think the players need to take more responsibility, they should be able to work out what isn’t working and change themselves

  4. Wait… so do you want enzo at 10 or not? In the beginning you said to put enzo at 10. In the end you are saying we are putting a great no. 6 at no.10. We tried both. I am confused.

The problem is there is no build up system. No one moves off the ball except for rare one twos by Jackson and Palmer around the sideline. We need more off-ball movement structure.

  5. Chelsea are so frustrating… this sums up a lot of the reasons why. Pochettino is very overrated, but maybe he can start following fourfourtwo to show him a way forward

  6. Doesn’t help that Poch often plays Caicedo and Enzo miles apart which means that despite Caicedo being press resistant, he’s inevitably crowded out when left isolated with no passing options

  7. He's right that Enzo should not play too up high. But he did not really do this last game. The main problem was that Palmer was played out of position as a center forward and Jackson and Madueke do not have suficient quality as wingers, especially since they don't make the runs they need to do. In the second half Nkunku came on, Palmer switched to right wing and things started to become better. In the end both of Gallaghers goals were created through Palmers side. He should be the first name on the pitch as right winger.

  8. Oh my goodness… Another video Mr pochettino needs to see. Also with those 425 passes they moved so excruciating slow, that's how you can count to 425. By the way love your videos Adam… I swear you a Chelsea fan. 😂

  9. Enzo and Caiecedo are not particularly good at pressing and recovering balls as Gallagher is. They may be talented but they aren't mature enough to make intelligent adjustments when things don't go according to the coaches plan. The switch in formation in the second half helped but they have along way to go.

  10. That was an incredible insight. I think in time they will gel into this set of players who really get a feel of where they should be, how they interact with one another, and what to expect from each other. I think what is key to this is Poch knowing his best 11, if not, hardly playing around with his defence and midfield. That’s where the build up play is. Keeping his spine too. The wingers can mix n match, but Enzo, Gallagher and Caicedo need to know each other better than they know themselves, and then in time, like you mentioned, Enzo will swap with Gallagher when on the attack, and Caicedo and Enzo will help him more in the press. Our wingers need to be pressing more in order to create chances further upfield. We’re not catching teams out enough, and we struggle against low blocks because we aren’t pressing, albeit Gallagher is but that’s not enough.

  11. This is what I keep telling everyone we play like shit and no matter who they throw up top of you can’t create chances you won’t win games with any consistency. If we had Haaland as our striker this season he would have like 6 goals if he doesn’t take pens

  12. "if you enjoyed this video, my god, why?"
it's the same reason why we watch people eat ghost peppers or do stupid stunts. So we can be in pain and cringed together and that for some reason is fun.

  13. as a chelsea fan ive vowed not waste my time ever watching chelsea game if poch is still our manager the guy doesnt have any mysterious tactics that can make us a top team like klopp artetas arsenal bologna leverkusen …..mehn i envy those teams when they play they play good football

  14. Diverting fault from enzo, and caicedo now, seems to me as simply being blind to facts. They’re not at fault for coming in to chelsea, but they’re not fulfilling the roles the system needs. Caicedo simply was not the man for the job, he’s better suited in a double pivot, and chelsea are not that.

Enzo on the other hand, holds a lot more responsibility. He was brought for a reason, his playmaking abilities from deeper zones. The system has been shifted to better suit his abilities, and he has even been liberated of some defensive responsibilities by pairing him with players quite capable in pressing. Yet, he remains inconsistent. His limited passing range have only increased some of chelsea’s woes from a time back

  15. Even when you're doing good there's always people waiting to pick apart the negatives. If Chelsea manages to win 10 games in a row I bet y'all will still find a dumb statistic prove why Chelsea isn't good. smh

  16. Very interesting and persuasive analysis but although you assert that Caicedo is very “press resistant” he has been losing the ball a lot this season -admittedly because he is often isolated, too far from Fernandes.

  17. Gallagher is to blame the midfielders to get overrun, because he is allways in wrong place, ALLWAYS, he is just lost in wrong areacode 99% of time.

In Liverpool game he went hiding and caused Enzo and especially Caicedo to be overrun through the midfield all game long and against palace he was hiding all game, but he just had the goals, whoopdy doo, he still sucks bigtime.

Gallagher is 100% to blame and must be benched so that Palmer who is 1000 times better than Gallagher playing the Gallaghers 10 role.

Because of Gallagher the whole offensive block is miss managed, just because Poch insists to force Gallagher into a position he sucks at and makes the team worse.

I been telling all season Gallagher is just a another squad player and not a starter, but because Poch insist playing him and Sterling aswell Silva Chelsea will be losing majority of games when those three players are in the lineup.

The best games Chelsea has played this season have been without Silva, Sterling and Gallagher starting, but just because the rest is making Chelsea winning games, those three players get first choice even thou evidence of this season shows that Chelsea is 100 times better without them.

I hope Poch gets sacked after the City game, because he will play Gallagher and Sterling, Silva is injured, and those 2 will be enough to cause havoc for Chelsea.

Expect Chelsea to be run over like 5,6,7-0 at Ethihad.

I bet fanboys will protect Gallagher and Sterling just because they are English and blame all the foreighners.

Poch out, Sterling out, Gallagher out, Silva out and rest of the team will gel and fix by themself, before the end of the season.
Maybe they even find some sort of rhytm and go on a winning run….
With Gallagher, Sterling and Silva Chelsea is doomed to lose.

  18. Chelsea need to get Xabi Alonso. I feel like he would utilise that midfield of Enzo and Caicedo used properly. Reckon we get into a bidding war with Liverpool for him.

  19. When some random bloke on YouTube knows more about tactics than Chelsea's manager who is being paid millions to know about tactics, and doesn't know anywhere nearly as much as said random bloke then the world really has gone mad! Please apply for the Assistant Manager job 🙏 at Chelsea – WE NEED YOU to educate Pochettino!💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
