Dean Henderson has had a tough spell at Crystal Palace since joining. He was seen as an extravagant expense for a club not known for buying big – at a time when they were very happy with first choice stopper Sam Johnstone.
Henderson suffered an injury on his debut, against Manchester United, but in recent weeks he has been moved up to Palace number one. And it is not going well.
Last night he was on the wrong end of a 3-1 loss to Chelsea, and Henderson has now conceded 14 goals in his last four games.
According to The Telegraph, Manchester United expect to receive £20 million for Henderson, which was £15 million and £5 million in add-ons.
At the time this seemed low, with many fans disappointed at a figure which was less than was speculated, and below the fee City got for James Trafford in the summer, who signed to Burnley.
Yet the injuries created a lack of demand for Henderson, and United had little choice other than to take what they could.
Henderson is not playing like a £20 million player, and United have actually benefitted further by removing his wages from the books. The MEN had reported he was earning £110,000 per week.
Right now Palace fans are calling for Sam Johnstone’s return, and there is a real chance Henderson ends the season on the bench, and with the Eagles sinking like a stone at present, a worst case scenario where they are relegated.
If either of those situations transpire, then the £20 million fee looks even better for United. Right now Palace supporters are certainly left feeling like their club overpaid.
