Arsenal manager said he “couldn’t be prouder” of his players after an “incredible” performance in defeating league leaders Liverpool 3-1 in the English Premier League on Sunday.
The Gunners benefited from two second-half errors from Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson Becker to claim victory over Liverpool, and move to second place and just two points behind the “Reds.”
Defending treble-winners Manchester City are in third place, five points off Liverpool, but with two games in hand, and Pep Guardiola’s men will likely be happy with the result at Emirates Stadium before their away trip to Brentford on Monday.
Arsenal had gifted an equalizer to the Liverpool in first-half stoppage time as Gabriel Magalhaes’ own-goal cancelled out Bukayo Saka’s 14th-minute opener.
A mix-up between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson allowed Gabriel Martinelli to round off a fine individual performance by re-establishing the lead for Arsenal in the 67th minute, before substitute Leandro Trossard fired through Alisson’s legs — via a slight deflection off Van Dijk — in second-half stoppage time.
It was just a second league defeat of the season for Liverpool, who struggled to get into the game for the majority of the first half at Emirates Stadium and ended with 10 men as Ibrahima Konate was sent off for a second yellow card in the 88th minute.
