  1. To summarize: Herc agrees with Van der Vaart but doesn't like how he criticised Dest.
Thr Dutch are direct they don't like to sugarcoat things. It wasn't meant as a personal shot at Dest.😅
And him saying that Dest is a RB for a reason is not meant as put down.

  2. That critic isn’t wrong. I think we over rated dest after just one year at Ajax he moves to Barca. 0 real glimpses of success there and now looking the same at AC. Gimme joe scaly all day at this point. One of the best RBs in the bundesliga is more than fine enough. And he defends first and still can get forward.

  3. The thing about Dest is that while he is an RB by trade he actually doesn’t do well in a back four as he actually plays better when it’s a back three he’s playing as a right wing back.

  4. Dest has the talent to be in charge of the us defense and even be the us captain but when xavi let him go it sent a message that as good as he is he lacks that certain extra to be a top tier player.

  5. I’ve never understood why he’s a defender at all. He’s not very good at defending. I know he makes poor decisions in attack, but seems like with experience it would improve.

  6. If Van de Vaart gives you advice, you listen. I dont think there was any shots fired, the dutch just dont have a filter

  7. Not sure I agree with herc dismissal of the comparison to Yedlin. (Other than yedlin was all pace and dest has good technical ability.) At Dests age, yedlin was at Totenham loaned to Sunderland (premier league at the time) then went to Newcastle the following season got them promoted to premier league and finished mid table over the next seasons as one of their most used players.
Point is their level wasn’t that different at that age and hindsight is influencing herc to much.

  8. All criticisms aside, he is the MOST gifted player ever in the USMNT pool from a technical standpoint. There has never been a more skillful and flair-heavy player. Ever. Takes on and beats a man so well. U could argue Pulisic is better but Pulisic is more direct. Dest is the most skilled we’ve ever seen tho. Like, wat USMNT player has ever done an elastico in-game.

  9. The thing about Dest is, unlike the vast majority of young Ajax players, he went to a "bigger" club without having actually made a mark at Ajax.
Frenkie and De Ligt for example played key roles in Ajax run in the CL where they were 1 half away from reaching the final.
Even this year Ajax sold a handful of their young starters to bigger clubs after putting in good performances last season.
That move to Barca was too soon, as Barca were (and still are) in a phase where the fanbase is restless for titles and the club is desperate to sign anyone who they think will turn things around.

  10. The good thing about this is he just turned 22 and if the thing he needs to work on is tactical astuteness and positioning those are all things that can keep improving unlike technical skills which don’t change much past 20

  11. Americans and Mexicans are pathetic fans they get so salty when they are told the truth to their face that they have good or decent players not elite. Mexico and the U.S need to focus on the Gold Cup that is they only thing they can win they don't have quality to win in bigger tournaments.
