Fans booed after Lionel Messi sat on the bench for the entire 90 minutes of Inter Miami’s pre-season friendly against a Hong Kong XI due to a hamstring strain. Luis Suárez also failed to take to the pitch because of a knee injury he picked up in Saudi Arabia. The booing became louder in the final minutes with some disappointed fans also chanting ‘refund’ at the Hong Kong Stadium.

After the match, which the MLS side won 4-1, Inter Miami’s head coach Gerardo Martino apologised but explained that ‘if we had any possibility that they could have played for a while we would have done it. But to do so would have been taking serious risks and that’s why we took this decision together with the technical staff.’

  1. how arrogant. 40,000 fans utterly disappointed. just walk on the field and pretend to play for one minute is not that difficult. no words. no smile. no apology. miraculously he will be able to play in japan next wednesday. we'd never see this kind behaviour with Pelé.

  2. Football really is for Europe, where people can afford to pay for a football match. Asian fans are just pretenders. That hard-earned cash was supposed to be for the rice on the table.

  3. Messi didn't play on friendly match when Argentina tour at Australia and Indonesia too… he taking holiday with his family's instead, while his team mates plays seriously eventho its just an exhibition .. Messi being Messi 😌

  4. he should really just retire he seems to be get getting injured easier now and he seems burnt out physically and mentally which is understandable.. I mean I think he’s achieve a lot at this point he’s just being used as a prop for inter at this point

  5. This is utter disappointment. Feeling bad for these honk kong fans. The Goat has come to your city yet he doesn't even showed up to play. . Atleast wave and acknowledged the fans. They spend their hard earned money for this moment. Their actions justified here.

  6. The audience was scammed by inter Miami as they stated that Messi will play in the match but notified that he won’t in the morning; where the contract signed w the govt says the same(but they notified the govt 10 mins before the match ends)
Shame on Inter Miami, shame on Messi

  8. This is why us can't make football or soccer same level as south america. But why u want blame Messi??he is not the boss.u think if the manager and jorge said no messi,he can throw tantrum on the bench??

  9. The fans has right to protest because the management promises Messi to playing and they paid a lot of money. This was totally scam and the management should refund at least half of the money. Why Inter Miami don't learn their lesson after what happened to Cr7 and Al Nassr situation? Shame because they just used Messi name to take advantage but didn't use it properly. Fans deserve this refund. 😏
