South Korea head coach Paulo Bento has admitted that their final Group H opponents Portugal will start as favourites when the two teams meet at the Education City Stadium on Friday, but said that his team will give everything in order to secure the win that will give the ‘Taegeuk Warriors’ the chance to progress to the knockout phase at Qatar 2022.

“This is a huge challenge we have ahead,” Bento said. “We’re going to face that challenge, put it to the test and I’m confident our players will show their very best. We’re going to exhaust every possibility that we have to meet the challenge, we’ll do everything we can.”

It’s a must-win game for Lisbon-born Paulo Bento’s side – following a goalless draw with Uruguay and a 3-2 defeat by Ghana, South Korea sit third in the table on one point, two behind Ghana and five behind the already-qualified Portuguese.

It means that even if they can beat Cristiano Ronaldo and company, they need Uruguay to avoid defeat against Ghana in their final game to snatch second place and progress to the knockout phase.

Defender Kim Young-gwon said he was hoping that good fortune will be on their side in the match.

“We have nowhere else to go but to go forward,” he said. “This is our last chance and I think that under these circumstances, all we can create is a miracle at the moment.”
