Mexican international Edson Alvarez produced the complete midfield performance as West Ham beat Freiburg 2-0 to top Group A in the Europa League. Alvarez was absent from the 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Fulham and it has become evident how important he is to West Ham. He scored a goal and created another for former Ajax team mate Mohammed Kudus and made the defence better. When Álvarez doesn’t play we miss Declan Rice

  1. Only thing about Kudus I see is sometimes when he makes a mistake or has the ball taken off his toe he at times seems to just stop, but he is an absolutely sensational player and Alvarez is an absolute machine and crucial in our mid

  2. I believe that the whole team lost to Fulham but I fully believe if he was on the pitch it probably wouldn't have been a thumping and probably they wouldn't have gotten a clean sheet

  3. I think we need to be a little realistic Gonzo. Freiburg were not very good. We had a easy group and we'll struggle in last 16. Freiburg were nowhere near Premiier League standard. There were not many in for JWP and i can see why!

  4. Alvarez was playing like an old-style libero last night which made a higher press possible especially with Mavropanos in for Zouma. If TS can work more magic in January this could be some season!

  5. We would never have lost to Fulham if Alvarez had played. That's how much this superb addition to our beloved Hammers matters – he's essential.

I hope Steidten is working on finding us a player who can fill in when Alvarez is either suspended or, God forbid, sustains an injury that keeps him out of the team.

  6. At the beginning of the season, Ajax got to be bottom of the league with a few games signed and sealed, so proper bottom of the barrel. Especially, Ajax suffer in Europe a lot more without Alvarez. There was a stat that when Alvarez doesn’t play, Ajax would concede twice as many goals as when he was playing. Massive impact this player

  7. No we robbed nobody.
    1. Ajax made a substantial profit on both players.
    2. We paid fair market as there was competition for the players.

By contrast Haller to Ajax was daylight Robbery. The fact that these deals are working out so well will balance the books on that deal when these two finally move on.

  8. I watched a few Stuttgart games back when we signed Dinos in the summer and he would regularly move from the right sided CB in a 3 to right back and their wing back moved up and inside into an inside forward . It was very smart and its good to see Moyes doing something similar.

  9. The performance by Alvarez is what Rice should be doing if he is still around. Pushing the team forward by being a defensive presence. And when the situation permits, move forward to assist/score.

  10. As a Mexican American watching the Premier League and especially the Mexican players, Edson has been great for West Ham. Very professional player. He has grown since joining Wesy Ham, which shows the level of the Premier League.

  11. What was obvious on Thursday . We need decent cover or competition for Alvarez . He will need resting and we don’t work as a team without him . JWP supporting attack he was a different player . You just had to look at the affect on the team when he went off . Better sides will exploit that . We made Freiburg look ordinary. The linkup play in attack was a joy to watch . Let’s see that against Wolves

  12. I'm from Mexico and now I'm living in London. I have been a fan of West Ham for a long time, especially because it represents the working class. But now with Alvarez, I need to live the full experience. Do you know which game could be a good option for me?
