Liverpool faces challenges in securing RB Leipzig’s impressive striker Lois Openda.
According to Sacha Tavolieri, Liverpool has a strong interest in securing the services of Lois Openda. Jurgen Klopp might be eyeing a new striker in the upcoming transfer windows, although a potential move for the 23-year-old Bundesliga forward may not materialize in January.
Lois Openda played a pivotal role for RC Lens last season, and without him, the French side has faced difficulties. Despite selling him to RB Leipzig and acquiring Elye Wahi, they lacked the Belgian’s impact upfront.
Openda has made a significant impact in the Bundesliga, scoring nine goals already. His performances in the Champions League have also been noteworthy, particularly in the recent narrow loss to Manchester City.
The young Bundesliga forward’s early displays have attracted interest from several top clubs. Although some big Premier League sides have inquired, Leipzig is not inclined to sell in January. Arsenal and Chelsea are also interested, with Mikel Arteta and Chelsea seeking new strikers next summer, respectively. Manchester United, led by Erik ten Hag, is also in the race.
Journalist Sacha Tavolieri now includes Liverpool as a contender for Openda. Jurgen Klopp might be looking to enhance his forward line despite Liverpool having one of the best attacking setups. The only potential gap in their roster could be Darwin Nunez.
Klopp may consider Openda or another striker like Victor Osimhen if an opportunity arises. However, signing the 23-year-old Bundesliga forward might not be straightforward due to financial considerations. Fabrizio Romano mentioned an £69 million release clause in Openda’s contract, but it only becomes active in 2025.
Therefore, any club aiming to secure Openda’s services before that would likely need to pay a premium, with Leipzig potentially demanding a fee exceeding £87 million. Currently, Openda is considered Leipzig’s prized asset, and they will seek the best possible value in a market lacking quality strikers.
