Roma’s super-sub Rasmus Kristensen emerged as the hero, igniting a remarkable late turnaround against ten-man Sassuolo. The Danish player played a pivotal role in both of his team’s goals, winning a penalty and then scoring a deflected strike in a 2-1 victory.

In the initial half, neither team displayed much attacking prowess. Paulo Dybala’s saved shot for the visitors marked the sole effort on target in the opening 20 minutes. On Sassuolo’s end, Andrea Pinamoni and Domenico Berardi missed their chances before Berardi’s scuffed shot inadvertently turned into an assist for Matheus Henrique, who capitalized from close range inside the six-yard box.

The situation likely irked José Mourinho, particularly after Roma’s draw with Servette in the UEFA Europa League just days prior. Dybala nearly equalized with a curling effort from outside the area, expertly saved by Andrea Consigli. Meanwhile, Kristian Throstvedt’s attempt was denied as the hosts aimed to extend their lead.

Aware of their minimal away league goals (just nine this season), Roma aimed for clinical efficiency but saw Romelu Lukaku squander a clear opportunity after halftime. Despite their opponents sitting deep, the task became more challenging for Sassuolo when Daniel Boloca was sent off following VAR intervention for a reckless challenge on Leandro Paredes.

Roma, however, struggled to break through the compact defense until Kristensen was fouled by Martin Erlic, earning them a penalty. Dybala converted the resulting spot-kick, leveling the score. Shortly after, Kristensen surged into the box, firing a shot that deflected massively, looping over everyone and finding the net.

The turnaround deflated Sassuolo, with Uros Racic missing their best chance to level the score at 2-2. This result marked Sassuolo’s fifth consecutive home game without a win and extended their streak of 22 Serie A matches without a clean sheet. Conversely, Roma, who had struggled in their most recent five attempts at the Mapei Stadium, secured their sixth victory in their last eight top-flight fixtures.
