Player sympathiser Keown strikes again
Anyone who heard Martin's commentary for the bbc will tell ya just because someone has played the game doesn't mean they have a clue about it
I think the issue is, England are not as good as Liverpool. For example, you'd take the three other first choice defensive positions next to Trent in the Liverpool side, over what Trent might play alongside with England.
Plus, any argument of "Against better opposition, etc." is nullified when you consider Trent has neen playing Champions League football for six years and has made three finals.

He’s not getting called out. His defensive disaster classes have been highlighted because it was the lead up to a World Cup and he was being compared to others in his position.

Trent is a brilliant attacking RB, but he needs a great midfielder behind him who is able to get across the pitch and offer cover.
Trent is the most accomplished player of his era, people are to quick to jump on his defensive worries. He has 2 or 3 other defenders their to cover him when he's out of place. His talent is to great not to be starting
People have seen a couple of compilations of him not being able to defend and have decided he can't defend at all. It is the weaker part of his game but it's not as bad as people say. And he DOES get called out more than other players. Not as bad as Harry Maguire but it has been relentless over the past few months.
Southgate doesn't choose him because he doesn't know how to use creative players like that and that's why Trippier is favored when Walker isn't available. He prefers to play it safe.
Good for Trent for doing the interviews knowing those kinds of questions are going to keep being asked. He handles them well.
Always annoys the heck out of me how much critisicm Trent is getting. Yes he has been off form at the start of the season (the last 2-3 months) nobody is disputing this and yes he was rightly critisized for it.
However, Trent was part of the best defense in the league least season along with Man City and nobody said a word. Baring one season when Liverpool lost all there Central Defenders for months, hes been part of one of the best defences in europe for the last 3-4 years. The lad has won everything in football at club level and when he was IN FORM for years on end and his numbers were staggering and imperical evidence proves this unquestionalbly…Southgate never picked him.
Its very simple Southgate has his favorites thats all there is to it. I also dont agree with Simon here its clear that Trent's excellence over the last 3-4 years has put him in such a position when he did go badly out of form at the start of the season he got a huge amount if not to much criticsm accross the board about his displays.

Trent, Henderson and mount are the only players in that team that won the UCL. They are the only ones that actually have won at the highest level on tournament style competition. Most of the other players haven't even played in a UCL final.
Trent isn't a defender. he should be changed to a wide forward or a number 8.

I think thats obvious that he cant defend just like we know maguire is slow and clumsy, or pickford lets in soft goals with his short reach or trippier cant take a man on, if you play the game competitively these are too obvious to ignore. If you want to be noticed for your qualities, then take the critics that comes with it

Martin is 100% CORRECT…. TAA is already at his age pigeonhole as a FB when ANY team around the world would employ him as a WB…. His International career could be in taters because of this …… A manager who has no idea how to use him at his best ability representing his country, I do not think TAA played a game for his country during to Nations League, I also believe he should leave Liverpool and play for a team that puts him as a WB which would improve his position for his country….. EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK HE SHOULD BE PLAYING AS A WB IN FRONT OF KW AT FB …..

If he’s so good going forward why don’t they play him midfield? Genuine question , they clearly have a weak midfield and hes definitely suspect defensively
His passing will create changes vs any opposition. Kane will swallow his crosses. Trippier has looked poor and Walker is now fit to cover him defensively. Start him vs Senegal.
