Today we’re taking a look at the numbers behind Darwin Nuñez’s much-debated start to life at Liverpool.
Liverpool’s first major signing after Julian Ward took the reins from Michael Edwards as the club’s sporting director, Darwin Nuñez’s £67.5million arrival at Anfield was greeted with an unusual amount of intrigue. After seeing club legend Sadio Mané leave for Bayern Munich and having lost out on €100million Aurelien Tchouameni to Real Madrid, the fact the Reds decided to use up the bulk of their summer budget and sign Nuñez for an inflated fee in the same window that Man City signed Erling Haaland for considerably less, immediately put pressure on the Uruguayan forward.
And while the Merseyside club arguably have a better hit rate than any other club in the transfer market, there are already doubts over Nuñez’s ability to hold down the number nine spot. Jürgen Klopp has called for patience, but the English press never are with big money signings, even ones who scored 26 goals in just 24 league starts the season before. The narrative currently dominating the debate over his start to life in England is that while he offers a lot to Klopp’s side physically, he doesn’t have the technical ability to succeed in the Premier League.
But is that a load of reactionary nonsense? Or does his signing represent a rare mistake for the Liverpool recruitment team? On today’s FD Explained, we’re going to take a look.

he reminds me of Andy Carrol
As a Liverpool fan , he’ll get there when he does he’s going to explode watch
NUNEZ would fit perfect in italy or spain not in premier league
Bit of a donkey, but he might come good eventually. Shame he lives in a world with Haaland
he needs to be put on the left wing, he had multiple runs in the city game where he out paced a lot of the city defenders and got through on goal but he couldn't finish or didn't pass to an open man. I see a lot of quality there and I hope that skill of his gets exploited and developed to be a something that is used to our advantage.
Never and never doubt salah
Feel like he waste so many chances and make all the wrong decisions like shoot instead of pass. His movement is good he just lack the end product
Objective data. Can't argue with it. Everything else is opinion. He's a perfect player for Spain, not England.
He only needs to improve his finishing which will come with time. He tends to smash the ball sometimes rather than place it, but he’ll learn
So harsh as well this video as his stats this season have been heavily impacted by the rest of the teams form, he’s lost the ball so much and not had many successful passes because of the teams overall play and he’s isolated alone up front when we’re playing poorly. Take tonight’s west ham game for a real example and it shown how good he really is when liverpool play how they usually do. Great first half
Let the guy adapt to the league. Every player is different. Some adapt easily like Haaland some take their time, regardless of their price tag. Many people are commenting like they could have done better themselves. Let the kid adapt to his club and environment.
There's a saying among Liverpool fans that "Nunez was born offside"
Resiliencia
no
Nunez is 23, has got 5 goals in just over 500 mins, yet people call him a flop. Let’s just be honest it’s cause he plays for Liverpool
He's not the worst player but he's nothing special. 100 millions value? Flop!
But at it stands, he’s shit in the prem 😂
HE HAS NOT EVEN BEEN THAT BAD WHAT IS EVERYONE CRYING ABOUT, funny how quick people forget how many of the world best took off slow at new clubs
Liverpool's midfield is FAR more concerning than Darwin
Give him a break the guy can barely speak English. Since this video he’s scored 6 goals in 7 games, once he adapts to the team he’ll get better. Team needs to improve to get the best out of him.
Nunez is a good striker, but not a great one…. Victor Oshimen and Vlahovic is way better than him in any aspect…. especially Oshminen…. maybe cause he is African and he us not getting the regoctinion he deserves
Wildness is born with not build after.
This maybe the worst use of 100M, and i say this my club spent 100M+ on shit shows like coutinho and griezmann.
