Wales manager Rob Page has said his side deserved their loss and that their performance against Iran was not good enough.

Ten-man Wales suffered World Cup heartbreak as two goals deep in second-half stoppage time sealed a 2-0 victory for Iran to leave their knockout hopes hanging by a thread.

Roozbeh Cheshmi’s stunning goal in the eighth minute of added time broke Wales’ resistance after goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey had been shown a straight red card for racing off his line and fouling Mehdi Taremi in the 84th minute.

Iran then added their second with practically the last kick of the game when Ramin Rezaeian finished off another rapid counter-attack with a cool finish over substitute goalkeeper Danny Ward.

Wales were seeking a victory in order to boost their hopes of reaching the knockout stages having come from behind to draw 1-1 with USA in their opening game, but they struggled to break Iran down, with Gareth Bale, becoming their most-capped player on his 110th appearance, unable to inspire any more heroics.

  1. Sorry, but this is on Page. Keep picking Bale and Ramsey, and hope for a bit of magic, when the other 8 have to run around and cover for these two has beens! Bale just jogs through games, managing his effort so he can stay on for 90mins. Weak management, and an early flight home!

  2. A very difficult position for the manager receiving questions BUT this is the first WC since 1958 and a performance so bad it’s hard to take in …. Gareth Bale name during the commentary was practically ZERO same for Ramsey …… Iran had energy total commitment, wanted to get forward etc etc Wales NOTHING …. passes were awful, no energy, no flare, no nothing …… I COULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT I WAS WATCHING ….. NEVER IN A MONTH OF SUNDAYS WILL THIS TEAM GET A RESULT AGAINST ENGLAND, NOT EVEN THEIR RESEVE TEAM ……. shameful performance…..

  3. Respect Pages honesty hear, but this is on him, not having the ass to sub bale, who is basically a passenger here, similar to Rooney at the End for England, just kept on for dead balls.

  4. England are well in control of the group, can pick where they want to finish.. Rough hand for Wales but iran looked at you and knew they could beat you. Probably pinned all their hopes on beating you!

Horrible way to lose right at the end 2 goals aswell.

  5. Wales beating England is almost impossible. In Euro 2016, they narrowly lost through a last minute goal, even though Wales had dominated the whole game and took the lead first with Bale scoring goal.

  6. wait a second, what??? really? dude i thought really that the wales did like a woodi magic or something, it should be like 6-0 for Iran, what for true reflection?

  7. I’m sure Wales is a good team to reach the World Cup, and believe me, Iran is much better than the first day they played against England, but it’s football. Sometimes things don’t go your way.

  8. Page under performed as manager very poor in world cup and players lacked quality when mattered. The England game the players were praised by page but heavy 3-0 defeat, poor all round and created not much considering needed a win and could have been 7-0 england chances they missed. Page and the players , were poor if truth be told.
