Ok we know Southgate is a reservist. I think at the end of his tenure as England Manager especially if he doesn’t win anything his legacy will always be that he had one of the greatest potential in an England squad but managed to “snatch defeat in the jaws of victory” as Simon would say. ( Even though I think the greatest potential in an England squad to win nothing is 2010 World Cup and Euro 96 in my opinion. 1990 had a decent coach but he also messed by not using John Barnes when he needed to. I still agonise about that . John Barnes comes in at the last minute two crosses in one resulted in a goal one Lineker messed up .I still don’t know how….) Anyway ,But more than those that he was the manager who went against his own principles on achieving power. The so called bad leaders code. Point in quote is that he himself said while laying out his manifesto at the beginning of his tenure . Keep in mind no one pressured him into offering this he volunteered the information wilfully so we can hold him to it.),That he will always choose his squad from form (merit) rather than reputation. He himself offered this as part of his manifesto . These were His principles and he has totally gone against it. I wonder how for example James Ward Prowse must feel knowing that no matter what he does, no matter how he performs for his club ,Calvin Phillips is always getting on the plane ahead of him. And the saddest thing for me is that Gareth himself was a former player who if that had happened to him would be absolutely livid. He has destroyed his legacy.
The saddest thing is that to get anyone creative or on form into his squads has always required pressure public pressure. That’s just not only to introduce them to the team but also to reintegrate them into the squad. It had to take public pressure to get Foden, Grealish, Maddison, Saka in and now even though the public can see that Sterling and James Ward Prowse deserve on merit to be on the squad ,Southgate against his original principles is standing in the way. Yes we know he is trying to nature that club feel in the national team but sure not at the expense of going into tournaments with the best team available to us. This is the basis of the fact Southgate that people are calling him incompetent. He has lost the respect of the authentic fans and slowly by slowly the respect in the players eyes are eroding well. Foreigners? They are just pointing at us and laughing. Unfortunately it might have to take some player doing something drastic like saying they are making themselves unavailable for England for Southgate and England while he is in post for us as English fans to wake up from this false reverie.(yes we are complicit in this as we have not called him out on it as long as he is getting us “almost” successful events) . Yes we lost one great potential at the top of his game at the time in Jamie Vardy. He made that statement on retirement (Yes Jamie some of us got the message) .we know Kane came into that world cup totally exhausted after playing almost every game for Tottenham yet Vardy was fresh. I still hold that if Vardy had been given minutes in that semi final ,we would have gone through. Every one could see that Kane was just walking about in the second half and even though we had a more than capable assistant in Vardy at the top of his game we still dithered to the abysmal finish. I have seen enough world cups to know that sometimes it’s not always the person you expect who comes through during a tournament. Schillachi, Rossi, Roger Milla and Julian Alvarez at the last World Cup are good examples who people who exceeded expectations when the main man was misfiring. Or in this case exhausted. I’m sure Kane would have come back reinvigorated and fired up for the final.probably even more motivated if he faced competition if Vardy had got us into that final .A good coach will recognise this and be ready to adapt and use it.
The amazing thing is there are still people out there who will want to convince us that he is the best person for the job (Pearce ) Some we know is mainly because he is their personal friend ,Yet deep down they know they have been settling for good rather than the best. (I wonder when true patriotism overrides friendship and says enough is enough) Hey I’m not knocking Pearce Patriotism for one second he has proved it with blood and sweat. I’m just saying I’ve should not be putting them in a position where they have to make that decision . There are people who are paid to make the decisions and they are not. At least Pearce and some of his mates have a reason. (It’s not uncommon by the way we saw how his pundit mates at Man United backed Solkjaer to the end)
Yes I would love to see Southgate’s legacy. He could of course claim at the end of his tenure that his improvised implemented policy managed the team to reach the Euros final and the World Cup Semi final and Quater final .This is good. But we have seen what the best in Serena wiegman can turn the “almost” into winners. We know we should have won the Euros after going one nil ahead on home soil with a team far superior to the Italians. We know with the wealth in talent we should have given the French a real run for their money at the last World Cup. We know with the squad we had in Russia , we should have definitely made the final again going ahead against Croatia. What is the weakest link in all those squads

The moment we stop putting up with good and going for the best we will realise the true potential of this team. We did it with Phillip Neville in the women’s team we should do it with the men as well.
Ask yourself we have the best league in the world our youth teams are winning world tournaments. Why isn’t this translating into the main team.
