Southgate will play Dier or Shaw at right back before he plays Trent because he doesn't have a clue.
Bad mistake not to sack the manager after the Hungary defeat, that was the perfect time to do it. Fraudgate was absolutely ecstatic after the USA game, I really think he’s unwell or something.

Trent was fantastic in his first 2 full seasons but since the start of 20/21, he hasn't hit anywhere near that level again. Teams found out how frail he is defensively target him. Those defensive frailties were more evident in the 20/21 season. A lot of fans put this down to injuries at the back that season but that's an excuse and doesn't take away from the fact he was poor. He also had only 7 assists whilst having the 3rd most touches in the final third and 297 crosses.
In the first half of 21/22, he performed brilliantly in attack with 10 assists but still looked shaky at the back. Then we look at his performances in the second half of 21/22 and all of 22/23, hes one of England's worst performing players in that time. He's had numerous poor defensive displays and only has only 2 PL assists in 11 months, in that time, he's had over 300 crosses.
England can't be expected to cover for a player that struggles to defend but the fact he hasn't performed in attack lately, makes it an easy decision for Southgate.
Trippier has a goal involvement every 230mins in the PL since his return, Trent has one every 520mins, in that time.
Add all this to the fact Trippier has performed at a high level for England over the last 5 years and Trent has never performed well, it's completely understandable why he doesn't play.

It's not the selection so much as the tactics. We have a starting lineup that's quite capable of doing the job. Southgate has obviously instructed them to prioritise defence (not conceding) – don't overcommit to attacks. That won't change with TAA replacing Trippier. Indeed, in that context (a defensive mindset) Trippier is probably the better starter.
